Outline of role: As a Personal Assistant your role is to help with everyday tasks as required/requested. The client has had a major stroke and as a result is Aphasic, Apraxic, Partially Sighted and has Limited Mobility. This means that the client is unable to speak or reliably use gestures, is blind on their left side, and uses a walking stick or electric wheelchair to get around. The position could be ideal for someone looking to gain experience working with people who have speech and language difficulties.

The client is living in the family home which includes his young grandchildren and a dog.

Communication can be challenging at times, the client has full understanding of written and spoken language, but is unable to fully reciprocate, although he is able to affirm or reject, and as such the successful applicant should excel at ‘20 Questions’ and at anticipating needs.

The clients family are on hand to help with any communication difficulties however the successful applicant is expected to develop sufficient rapport and communication to enable independent communication. All relevant training will be provided and care experience, though helpful, is not necessary.

Prior to his stroke he had a varied and unconventional lifestyle; attending juggling and circus conventions and travelling around staying with friends and family members. The client still has a good sense of humour and loves engaging with people, especially his granchildren. He is interested in politics and current affairs, music such as James and the Stone Roses and films.

The hours are variable (minimum of 13 hours per week) and will occasionally require accompanying the client on holidays. Shifts are 8-1.30 daily with occasional overtime in the afternoon and evenings.

The types of tasks that the client might need help with are listed below.

Tasks: Personal tasks - each day:
Help with dressing

Help with showering

Help with using his PC and google smart home devices

Household tasks - on a regular basis, as required:
Cooking and preparing meal and drinks

Keeping the Bedroom and Bathroom clean and tidy

Laundry - washing and drying

Changing bedding

General tasks - as required

Going to the local shops/assisting him to go to the local shops to get supplies

Helping to maintain his wheelchair

Social activities - as required

Providing companionship

Assisting in participating in various social activities,, including going to the cinema or theatre, going shopping, making video calls, visiting friends, accompanying on family holidays.

It will also be important for the successful applicant to engage with the client in relation to his interests providing regular social interaction.

This is not an exhaustive list of everything you may be asked to do, generally you will assist the client with all of his day to day activities.
