Joinery Workshop Machine Operator

Reporting to

Grosvenor Timberworks Operations Manager

Department

Forestry and Conservation Team

Primary location

Grosvenor Timberworks (GTW), Hatton Heath, Chester

GTW is a mixed us site with sawmilling, kilning, joinery, biomass, firewood, forestry, arboriculture and landscape operations.

Main purpose of role

The main purpose of the role is to work in the joinery shop to produce solid wood flooring, kitchen worktops, joinery grade hardwood and construction grade softwood.

There is a close working relationship with the sawmill team to ensure that timber coming into the workshop is the right quality and grade.

At times there may be a requirement to help on the sawmill line and with other tasks such as resawing and loading kilns.

The Joinery Workshop Machine Operator will report to the GTW Operations Manager who will provide direction, support and feedback through regular meetings and will plan weekly work and monitor tasks and their quality.

The Joinery Workshop Machine Operator has a key role helping to set up GTW and in establishing excellent standards, productivity, efficiency, and safety.

**Responsibilities**:

- Operate various machines to produce the key products. The key focus will be to maintain quality while meeting the required outputs.
- Maintain and adjust the machines as required to ensure top quality products are produced. Ensure that there are spares and consumables in stock so that machine downtime is minimised.
- Record inputs and outputs.
- Work with the Operations Manager to organise the day to day running of the workshop so that timber is processed efficiently, safely and on time to meet customer needs and for stock. It is important that the outputs specified in the business plan for the various operations, and which may change from time-to-time, are achieved.
- Occasionally as required work on the sawmill line including helping with crosscutting and resawing.
- Load, unload and monitor the timber kilns as required.
- Participate in educational, community and promotional engagement activities to showcase the sustainable woodland management and timber processing showcased at Hatton Heath Mill.

Essential skills, attributes and values
- Experience is beneficial but not entirely necessary as training will be given.
- An aptitude for working with machinery, basic practical knowledge of how machines work and basic use of tools such as spanners, screwdrivers and hammers is essential.
- The ability to organise a work area and workflow is essential. The role deals with raw timber coming into the workshop and finished products leaving. This requires good housekeeping and organisation.
- Able and willing to develop by attending training and keeping up to date with specialist knowledge.
- The ability to work alongside others and get on with people as part of a team.
- Sound problem solving skills and the ability to work on your own initiative, recognising and fixing problems with a machine once training has been given.
- The ability to look critically and constructively at your work and to make improvements, and to understand what quality looks like.
- Reliable with strong work ethics.
- Attention to detail and dedication to providing quality, error free work.
- Professionalism, discretion and confidential at all times.

All employees must uphold the shared values of Grosvenor:

- Integrity, be honest, fair and open
- Trust, be loyal, reliable and deliver on commitments
- Respect, be inclusive, straightforward, collaborative, caring and thoughtful

Key performance indicators
- Achieving the quality and output targets identified in the Grosvenor Timberworks business plan and timely delivery of products to customers. These targets will change as the business develops but are currently:

- Regular feedback on quality and standards from the Operations Manager.
- Improvements in the time it takes to do jobs and the cost. To be demonstrated through management records.
