Trauma-responsive Specialist Children's Worker Ne32
7 months ago
The Belay Foundation places Specialist Support Workers in the homes of families whose children have previously been in local authority care. This position is supported by Arc Adoption.
This great opportunity is to support two children, aged 4 and 5, for five hours per week, probably spread between a Thursday evening and one other evening each week.
Freddie* (5) is a busy, chatty, curious, high energy boy. He loves riding a bike, swimming, and really any form of running and jumping; he also enjoys singing, particularly Christmas songs (even in July), as well as - inevitably - playing on the iPad Flossie* (4) is super sociable and makes friends everywhere she goes: she particularly likes playing with dolls, anything that involves water, and loves the local park. Freddie and Flossie both live with the impact of trauma from their earliest years: the sibling dynamic can be a challenge, and they struggle with food and concentration and sharing adult attention; both children present as emotionally younger than their chronological ages.
The role is to support the family by spending time in the long run with both children - although probably just with Freddie at first - gradually building individual trusting relationships, providing additional adult input both at home and out and about, and potentially to support the children in attending clubs such as gymnastics. Working with Flossie, Freddie and their parents will offer an extremely rewarding opportunity to develop skills working with children with complex developmental trauma using an attachment model of care. You will need to be mature, emotionally grounded, curious, patient and reflective, and above all be keen to gradually build stable, healthy and attuned relationships with both children.
You will have experience of working with nursery or primary children, an interest and preferably experience in the developmental impacts of attachment and trauma, and a willingness to learn and invest in the family. It is essential that you are willing to work with Freddie and Flossie’s parents through using models of care that work well for them as a family.
To support you, The Belay Foundation will offer training in attachment and trauma, safeguarding, professional boundaries and regulating techniques, as well as other any other preparation that will help you in the role. You will also receive ongoing support, peer supervision and clinical supervision.
