The fellowship is under the direction of Mr Mayank A. Nanavaty. The anterior segment fellow can expect to receive comprehensive training in corneal disorders, modern keratoplasty techniques, complex cataract surgery and medical and surgical management of acute anterior segment disorders as the department has a high throughput of routine and complex corneal and anterior segment and a tertiary referral center for complex anterior segment disorders. This fellowshipgives a very good experience as a foundation to the consultant post as it has sessions where the fellow will be expected to do cataract surgery independently.

The anterior segment service has a strong focus on research and development in this sub specialty and accordingly there will be opportunity to develop, contribute to or continue research studies in cataract, cornea and anterior segment sub-specialties as well as a weekly Friday PM teaching sessions. The Sussex Eye Hospital is a part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and has a complement of 11 Consultant Ophthalmologists and has bases on both the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Princess Royal Hospital and Lewes Victoria Hospital sites. Every week there is a regional all day Friday afternoon session that takes place usually in Brighton and once a month in Eastbourne or Hastings. This consists of clinical Grand Rounds, visiting speakers, local speakers and audit and clinical governance sessions.

The post holder accepts that he / she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with his / her colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. The clinical duties of the post include the following: Assisting in all aspects of theatre, inpatient and outpatient care.Pre and post-operative patient care.On call duties On Call Commitment: 1:8 Registrar on-call duties (non-resident)Research and clinical improvement projects: the fellowship has a strong research focus and the post-holder is expected to take an active role in ongoing and new research studies and clinical improvement projects.
