Consultant in Anaesthesia Permanent

The Department of Anaesthetics is a friendly and supportive one. We have recently achieved ACSA Accreditation from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and we are extremely proud of this achievement. We welcome innovation and will support change where it improves our care to our patients.

This post will be based mainly at St Helier Hospital, although cross-site working may be required depending on the needs of the service.

The post holder will be required to participate in a 1 in 12, non-resident on call rota

The Epsom & St Helier Anaesthetic department is aligned with the St. George’s (STG) teaching programme for medical students and the South Thames School of Anaesthesia training programme. We have ACSA Accreditation.

There is a well-established Simulation teaching programme which gives opportunities for suitably qualified applicants

We score highly in national Hip Fracture audit data and are one of the busiest 5 units in London.

We have a dedicated Day surgery Paediatric Hospital with visiting Surgeons from St George’s and a busy Obstetric Unit.

The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients.
To at all times, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time.
To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable
and in agreement with your Clinical Lead and Director.
To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate
Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).
To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training program.
To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and out patients under your care.

The posts will have daytime sessions on both sites. Out of hours on calls will be based at the ST Helier Site.

The St Helier site houses the Queen Mary Children’s Hospital.
Most of the elective work is done at Epsom site which also has a PACU and level 2 High Dependency Unit for medical patients. We have a labour ward at both sites with over 2000 deliveries at Epsom and around 3500 at St Helier.
Our elective surgery work include general surgery and major colorectal; urology including laparoscopic nephrectomies and PCNL; gynaecology; orthopaedic including spines,shoulders and hands as sub-specialties; ENT and dental.
Paediatric surgery, including ENT, dentals, orthopaedics, general, and urology occur in the Queen Mary Children’s Hospital. This has a children’s Day unit, with an operating theatre and a dental procedure room.
All the surgical emergencies and most of trauma (level 2) are done at St Helier. St Helier also has a level 3 ITU.

The proposed job plan for each post is below. This will be discussed in detail with the post holder on appointment. Job plans will be reviewed annually, following an appraisal meeting.
The job plan including DCC (Direct Clinical Care) and SPA (Supportive Professional Activities) will be a prospective agreement that sets out a Consultants typical working pattern, duties, objectives and responsibilities for the coming year. The SPA time will be negotiated depending on work being undertaken. It will cover all aspects of a Consultants professional
practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, managerial responsibilities and external commitments.
On appointment of the post holder, the Lead Clinician will commence discussions to finalise the job plan which will become operational on appointment.
