**Job description**:
Do you want to join the War Detectives? Do you have you proven research skills and a passion for military history? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Commemorations team as a caseworker. Due to the investigative worked carried out, this high-profile team has become affectionately known as the MOD War Detectives and featured twice on ITV’s Long Lost Family.

The work the team does makes a real difference to the families of historic casualties and our caseworkers see each case through from start to finish. This role can sometimes be emotional, frustrating, busy and complex but it is always extremely rewarding, and no two days are ever the same. With projects on the horizon this job has many interesting opportunities.

There is chance for travel overseas and you will work with a variety of stakeholders and family members.

This role is office based however, DBS are working hard to improve our access to, and use of, digital technology, empowering our people to work remotely (40% in the office).

**Main responsibilities**:

- Undertake complex historic casualty casework by detailed research accessing a variety of policies, records and sources with an aim to identify British Armed Forces Personnel who have no known grave.
- Accessing and interpreting of a wide variety of primary and secondary sources and DNA testing, where necessary.
- Production of well-reasoned, accurate reports which will stand up to scrutiny and any potential future investigation.
- Knowledge of genealogy to enable tracing living relatives for the purpose of obtaining DNA samples and then notifying them of results. Supporting these relatives throughout the process, including their attendance at the commemoration service of their relative.
- Organisation and attending ceremonies worldwide, including full military burials and working closely with relevant branch of Armed Forces.
- Working with the Media and Communications Team by writing press releases, social media posts and taking photographs as required. Speaking to the media and delivering briefings and presentations to a variety of groups
- Investigating and preparing draft responses for line management consideration on parliamentary and ministerial business
- Administration/Licensing of UK aviation archaeology and disposal of effects in accordance with the Protection of the Military Remains Act 1986
- Assisting with activations of the JCCC Major Incident Centre and support to real-time casualty cases
