Derby, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You'll be required willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

What it's like to work here:Working as part of a team of six Rangers, you'll be involved in looking after the in-hand Portland flock, Red and Fallow deer herds. Reporting to the Area Ranger, you'll help shape future land management decisions to work towards the Calke 50-year vision, creating a wood pasture landscape.

Sitting within the National Forest, you'll have the opportunity to be part of landscape scale change. Your day to day will include looking after the large number of veteran trees, ecological monitoring, meadow management and visitor infrastructure, which includes a historic tramway cycle trail, footpaths, benches, boundaries and entrance ways.

The 1,000+ hectare Calke estate contains a wide variety of important habitats, including broadleaf woodlands, species-rich hay meadows, wetlands and lake systems, limestone grasslands, and some of the finest wood pasture to be found anywhere, which has earned the park SSSI and National Nature Reserve status. The extensive collection of ancient and veteran trees, beautiful vistas, and huge amount of wildlife make Calke an inspiring place to be a Ranger. Our work balances managing the site for wildlife with ensuring our visitors can access and appreciate nature.

What you'll be doing:You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.

You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.
