The Scottish Ambulance Services’ Specialist Services Desk is based within the West Ambulance Control Centre in Glasgow. We co-ordinate the use of Air Ambulance assets, Trauma Teams and Specialist Retrieval Teams (ScotSTAR) for Scotland. We are the logístical epicentre of Specialised Critical Care within the Ambulance Service.

The Specialist Services Coordinators are the single point of contact for clinician’s and multidisciplinary teams across NHS Scotland accessing specialist pre-hospital transport and retrieval services. The SSD are responsible for robust decision making and logístical planning to facilitate the safe and efficient use of Scottish Ambulance service Special assets including Air Ambulance, ScotSTAR retrieval and pre-hospital trauma teams. You will provide a crucial coordination role within the Scottish Trauma network, to improve and optimise the health and wellbeing of the seriously injured whether that is sending a Critical Care team to the scene of the accident, or a retrieval with one of our ScotSTAR teams from a Rural Healthcare setting.

The post holder will also work closely with our 3 Ambulance control centres (ACC) staff, operational clinicians and stakeholder agencies.

The Scottish Ambulance Service Air Ambulance division completes approximately 3500 missions a year, providing a lifeline to the remote and rural communities of Scotland. The Scottish Transport and Retrieval Service (ScotSTAR) teams undertake approximately 2500 specialist transports and retrieval missions per year, moving some of the most critically ill patients in Scotland. Together these teams provide exemplary care to the most remote or vulnerable patients in Scotland. As a Specialist Service Coordinator you will participate in conference calls with senior clinicians to discuss the care and transfer of the most critical patients in Scotland.

The specialist services desk operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. As a co-ordinator you will be expected to work 12 hour shifts including weekends, bank holidays and festive periods. The available position is for a relief position, backfilling rota abstractions.
