Background and Purpose of the job
The Red Brick Building is a community owned social enterprise with a collaborative ethos delivering social impact with any profit made. Our community garden is about caring for the environment, learning the value of growing food organically and supporting the community’s mental and physical health.
We are looking for a friendly, reliable and self-motivated person with enthusiasm for community projects to join our team. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining the community garden and all the green spaces around the Red Brick Building incorporating wildlife friendly horticultural practices wherever possible.
This an exciting time of growth and development at The Red Brick Building and there will be opportunity for your own creativity to flourish as well as the chance to develop our nursery.
We have an established network of organisations that we work with to deliver activities, courses and workshops and we are looking to increase the opportunities for the community to access our outside space and benefit through the 5 ways of wellbeing - connecting, being active, learning, taking notice and giving.
You will work closely with our Community Garden Outreach Manager to develop the garden into a thriving hub of volunteers and co-ordinate garden activities for all ages to encourage the community to come out and enjoy our garden.
This is a funded part time post, 12 hours a week, on an 18 month fixed term contract with the possibility of extension.
Main Responsibilities
- Maintain, improve and develop the garden, borders and green spaces around the
Red Brick Building using wildlife friendly horticultural practices wherever possible
- Collaborate with organisations and co-ordinate garden activities such as seed swaps, open days, planting workshops and volunteering opportunities
- Utilise the therapeutic dome to provide community activities and extending our impact despite the weather and over the winter months
- Co-ordinate Volunteer gardening sessions and assist with the volunteer recruitment, support and training
- Ensure all relevant health and safety standards are met in relation to personal safety, the safety of volunteers, visiting school or community groups and members of the public using the site. Assisting with the development and review of risk assessments as required
- Be responsible for the proper use, maintenance and safe storage of all machinery, tools and equipment
- Work with Red Brick Building team to market and promote the community garden and events, capture news, stories and photos to help promote the project to increase visitors, participants and groups
- Manage spend against the project budget, reporting to the funding / accounts
Manager and help develop a fundraising plan to continue the post
- Monitor and evaluate the project capturing and recording impact in line with the projects funding requirements
- Report to and work closely with the Community Garden Outreach Manager
- Be willing and able to work flexibly with occasional evenings or weekends
- Ensure that Red Brick Building policies and procedures are followed at all times
- Undertake any other duties as deemed appropriate for the role
Person Specification
Experience of gardening, preferably within a community setting
Knowledge of wildlife gardening and organic food growing
Ability to work outdoors in all seasons
Experience of working with vulnerable adults, children and safeguarding
Ability to take a compassionate approach to individuals with a variety of complex needs
Preferably experience of managing, training and working with volunteers
Good written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of IT packages (Word, Excel, Outlook)
preferably experience of managing budgets
Highly organised and able to manage time and use initiative
Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations
Qualified first aider, or willing to qualify
Proven ability to work as a team

This is a fixed term contract: 18 months until October 2024, funded by Postcode Trust

Hours: 12 Hours a week
Pay: £12.50 per hour
Start Date: As soon as possible
Annual leave: 20 days plus 8 statutory holidays pro rata
