**ASTeC Programmes Group Leader**

**About you**

You will be passionate about science, physics, engineering, computing or a related domain. You will have a strong track record leading senior project professionals who are responsible for significant programmes with our national and international partners. You will get a buzz out of simplifying approaches to work and removing barriers to success so that we can meet the challenge of doing more with our precious resources. You will be adept at making data-driven decisions and clear-minded about how to present these data to stakeholders.

**About the role**

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Project professional to join the STFC Accelerator Science and Technology Centre at Daresbury Laboratory. As head of the ASTeC Programmes Group you will lead cross departmental teams responsible for the delivery of multi-million pound high impact science and technology projects.

As the ASTeC Programmes Group Leader, you will:

- Be a key member of ASTeC’s leadership team, working with other Group Leaders to map the strategic and tactical directions of the Department;
- Lead a team of dedicated professionals in the creation and delivery of project management plans and schedules, revise as appropriate to meet changing needs, priorities and other requirements.
- Identify resources and assign responsibilities to support ASTeC’s portfolio of projects.
- Work with our project managers to manage day-to-day operational aspects of the project(s).
- Work with Technical & Scientific Group Leaders to both provide governance and co-ordinate complex research and development programmes. Including undertaking some direct “hands on” project management activities as and when required.
- Develop and deliver a standard toolset for the governance and reporting of projects that ASTeC can roll out across its portfolio
- Ensure project work is delivered and documented in line with the requirements of ISO9001 2015.
- Work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient implementation of projects.
- Schedule expenditures; analysing variances, using earned value management (EVM) and schedule performance monitoring, to launch corrective actions as required.
- Prepare project status reports to stakeholders; anticipate and manage change control, feeding in to overall project governance necessary to meet both STFC and customer project management requirements.
- Be a pro-active leader, with excellent people management skills.
- Use the MS suite of office tools, including Power BI and Power Automate, for planning, and communicating project health and outlook.

**Qualifications**:

- Formal qualification in Project Management e.g. APMP, APM or Prince 2
- Honours Degree in a relevant engineering, technical or science discipline, or HNC/HND/Degree (Level 4/5/6), in conjunction with considerable experience in a project management type role.
- Have an excellent knowledge of project management techniques and processes, and ideally some understanding of particle accelerator-based technologies or related technologies syngeneic with STFC facilities or programmes.
- Be a proactive and self-motivated person, who is able to work in a dynamic environment, comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team, but also able to take responsibility.
- Have effective communication skills and the ability to manage internal staff and contractors.
- Have a strong safety culture and knowledge of how to work safely.
- Have strong computer skills and be experienced in the use of MS Office.
- Be willing and able to travel/work within the UK and overseas as required.
- Be prepared to work extended hours/nights/weekends to meet specific deadlines.
