The role

Newcastle University Finance Hub is a large team of skilled and experienced colleagues who manage the financial business activities of the University. We provide a professional and proactive service to our students, colleagues and stakeholders. We are committed to supporting the personal and professional development of our team.

We have an excellent fixed term opportunity for an Accountancy Assistant within our Contract Financial Management team. The team provides expert funder advice and financial management for University research and non-research projects, which can involve multiple domestic and overseas institutions.

This is a varied and interesting role which will allow you to make a real contribution to a small number of high-profile, innovative projects in a research intensive Russell Group university. You can also reap the benefits of being part of the wider University finance community and the development opportunities and professional support this can bring.

You will work closely with budget holders/project managers to undertake post award financial management and provide advice on external funder regulations and audits. You will use your initiative and judgement to make decisions and resolve issues relating to multi-million pound projects.

We are looking for a confident communicator who can build positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. Good numerical and IT skills are essential and you must be able to work accurately to tight deadlines. To thrive in the role you will need to be well organised and customer focused.

Key Accountabilities
Producing financial claims for complex projects to strict guidelines, in accordance with funder regulations and University policies
Providing comprehensive budgetary and forecast information and advice to researchers on the financial aspects of their funding to enable them to discharge their financial responsibilities on large complex projects
Attending project set up meetings with Grants and Contracts, Administrators and PIs to advise on appropriate SAP structures and financial management
Liaising with Research and Enterprise Services contract managers on specific financial matters associated with new and ongoing contracts
Creating complex projects in the SAP financial management system in order to facilitate the most effective structure to ensure appropriate controls are embedded. Projects to Include, multi funded, Research Council, collaborative, foreign funded and other complex awards
Maintaining and update data on the SAP financial management system relating to complex projects (e.g. structure, budget, and timescale)
Ensuring the timely closure of completed complex projects in SAP, including the final reconciliation
Providing guidance, training and advice to staff within the team on relevant SAP and University procedures and funder regulations
Managing the preparation of, and communicate with, auditors to arrange timely audit dates
Overseeing the calculation and checking of salary award increase and update the salary budgets in complex project

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
You should have recent relevant experience of the set up and financial management of projects, and Research Funder financial knowledge
High degree of literacy, numeracy and IT skills and experience and have strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Extensive experience in the reconciliation of financial ledgers
Experience of working effectively in a large and complex organisation to enable successful collaboration between the Finance, Faculty, School and other University roles is desirable along with experience of SAP financial systems
