**The role**

Are you passionate about land rights, Indigenous Peoples, and tropical forests, and do you have digital communication and web skills to contribute to positive change in the world? We are recruiting an Assistant Communication Officer to join our global human rights charity of 50+ dedicated staff. In this job, you will play a key role in supporting our comms team and staff in the development of our new organisational website, in addition to supporting other aspects of our communication work, including scheduling, and posting on our social media channels. Our new website will be launched in 2023, and this role will include migrating existing content, and developing new content for our website, so excellent website skills are essential.

We produce content for a wide variety of audiences, from policy makers in the UN system, to local and indigenous communities, our key supporters and our partners and staff. With support from other communication staff, you will develop and publish content across multiple channels, with a focus on our website and social media channels.
- or two-years’ experience in aspects of digital communication, with web-skills essential. Previous knowledge of human rights and/or indigenous issues is a bonus. You will be fluent in written and spoken English. A basic working knowledge of French and/or Spanish would be beneficial, though not essential for this role. You will be working as part of a small team engaged in collaborative work across our organisation and the wider movement, therefore excellent people skills and the ability to work under pressure are key.

**Contract**: Fixed-term employment contract (six-months full-time, or part-time equivalent)

Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) is an international NGO that supports indigenous and forest peoples to assert their rights to control and manage their lands, territories and forests.

We work with forest peoples in South and Central America, Africa, and Asia, to help them secure their rights, build up their own organisations and negotiate with governments and companies to ensure that any economic and conservation activities on their lands respect their rights to self-determination. FPP is made up of more than 50 dedicated and diverse staff from around the globe, all committed to working together with forest peoples, allies and partners. Within FPP, you will have the opportunity to input into multiple projects and ideas through regular knowledge exchange with other staff and partners, so a passion for working with people from many and varied backgrounds is essential, along with a willingness to learn new skills.

**Key responsibilities**:
**Communication**
- Provide operational support for communication projects, particularly our website and social media channels.
- Be responsible for migrating large amounts of our web content to our new web architecture, as well as input into developing our future website.
- Create multimedia communications materials, with a focus on social media / digital in close collaboration with the communication team, programme staff, and country teams.
- Post on FPP’s social media accounts, contributing to key messaging with inputs from the wider FPP team, and especially the digital communication officer.
- Assist others in the comms team with preparing, proofreading and production of our digital communication assets.

**Principles**:

- Work with respect for the right to self-determination of forest peoples.
- Create space for ‘local voice’ and ensure FPP’s own communications complements and supports (but does not replace, dominate, or subsume) the voices of forest peoples and their community-based or civil society organisations.
- Support the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent, and champion how this relates to communications outputs.

**Terms**:

- Salary in the range of £23,375 - £25,366 pa (pro rata for PT) depending on qualifications and experience.
- Location: We would prefer this position to be based in our offices in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, UK, though with flexibility for some remote working.
- 25 days leave (pro-rata for part-time), plus all public holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year when the office is closed.
- Time off in lieu and flexible working hours.

**Essential requirements**:

- Degree in journalism, communication, and/or relevant experience in a digital communications role, ideally within an NGO, advocacy, or international context
- Excellent written and spoken English, with some experience of writing and editing copy for print or digital media.
- Experience with a range of digital communication tools, including social media and website content management systems.
- Excellent organisational skills, a positive attitude, the ability to take direction and to work under pressure, and flexibility to prioritise multiple
