Lancaster, United Kingdom Lancaster University Full time

The Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) is looking to appoint an indefinite Student Programmes Officer to lead a team of programme administration for the department’s undergraduate and postgraduate students, schemes and modules, and postgraduate research (PhD students) support. The well-functioning and established team comprises six administrators (most of which are part-time) who work together with specific remits of undergraduate, taught postgraduate, postgraduate research, and, planning and assessment. The teaching team is part of a wider team of administrators in the department supporting other activities such as research, finance and human resources.

LEC is a large department with about 650 undergraduate students, 80 taught postgraduate students, 160 postgraduate research students, over 80 academic staff, 50 research staff and over 70 professional services staff (administration, business-facing and technical). LEC’s teaching and research focus on the natural environment, spanning across social and natural sciences. We are ranked in the top 15 UK universities across the three major national league tables. Lancaster University has been awarded the highest possible score in the UK government’s 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) ratings.

This exciting opportunity would be suitable for someone with experience of working in a busy and thriving environment, preferably within the Higher Education sector. You will be a key member of the professional services staff who is effective and contributes to the department’s strategic direction. You will lead the teaching administration team and ensure a high-level administrative service is provided to our students and academic staff. The main specific areas of activities you will be working on are quality assurance, quality enhancement, timetabling and assessment. Data management and digital processes are key functions of this role and demonstrable skills and experience in this area, such as using Excel, are essential. You will work collaboratively across the faculty and central professional service divisions, leading continuous improvement and driving new initiatives to meet strategic objectives that enhance the student experience. The ability to work on own initiative, manage time and have attention to detail is important. In addition, we are looking for someone who is able to communicate effectively with staff members, and with a commitment to excellent customer service. This varied and challenging role offers wide scope for personal and professional development.

LEC offers a highly collegial and stimulating environment for career development based on departmental values and embedded Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) considerations and actions. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practices undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research. Furthermore, we are active and progressive around sustainability, well-being and decolonising agendas.
