Farm and Animal Caretaker

Oswestry, United Kingdom Barnutopia Full time

This is a live-in position for someone who wants to be part of a happy team at a glamping and wedding venue. £8 per hour plus accommodation, utilities, Internet, and food rising to £9 per hour if you are a good fit and perform your job well. We are located in the countryside so it would be useful (more for you than for us) if you drive and have your own vehicle.

We need a Jack or Jill of all trades ready to turn their hand to whatever is needed living in a farmyard setting. We are not a working farm, but we do have animals. Generally, we are quiet in the winter (mid-Nov to end Mar), then busy most weekends until the end of July, then we have a mad 6 weeks when we are flat out. It's great fun though and we have seasonal workers who return every year.

Here is a taster list so you can see what you might be doing, but we really need someone ready to help with anything. You are not the only person performing these jobs and you will often work alongside other staff.

HOUSEHOLD
Keeping the kitchen clean and tidy.
Looking after the family dogs when we are away
Keeping dog yard clear of dog poo

ANIMALS
Donkeys, pigs, mini cows, cats.
All aspects of their care. Responsibility for their care and wellbeing. Feeding and handling daily, mucking out once or twice a week. We have someone who comes in from the village 3 days a week so you get a break, but you would need to step in if she could not come. You may still need to feed them in the evenings. We joke that animal care is all about managing the poo. This is true, so if you aren't up for mucking out or picking up after the dogs this won't work for you.

GLAMPING SITE
Changeovers between guests (changing beds, cleaning, vacuuming, tidying, minor fixes)
Guest (including children) interactions
Cleaning bathroom block
Mowing grass (ride-on and push mower)
Unblocking sewage pipes (rarely, but it has happened)
General maintenance

WEDDINGS
Set-up / take down
Fetching / carrying
Lugging 30-60 hay bales once or twice a week in summer (for aisles)
Dealing with guests
Helping with catering
Bar work
Late night tidy up

This is not a 9 to 5 job, and so is better for someone who lives in. Nor is it a 5 days on / 2 days off arrangement. You may work an hour in the morning one day and then 2 hours in the afternoon. Another day you might work 8 hours. During the high season, we sometimes put in 16-hour days. We consult each other if we want to take time off so that we can be sure the animals are still looked after. Time off over weekends is rare during the season as that's when most guests are here. You could expect to work between 15-20 hours per week over winter (Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar), 20-30 hours the rest of the time, except for the 6 or so weeks over summer when it is closer to 40 hours per week.

If you are a handyperson/carpenter, so much the better. This could give you extra hours if you want them. But is not essential.

There are plenty of breaks, laughs, good company and great food to keep us going.
