SHINE Outreach Team are currently recruiting for a Senior Social Care Officer (SSCO) to cover a maternity leave position, beginning May 2023. The post is 36 hours per week - with some flexibility required in the hours that you work. The team cover of all Perth and Kinross.
SHINE supports children and young people with a diagnosis of autism (or awaiting assessment) and/or other complex or additional support needs. The team are creative, compassionate and build trusting relationships with children/young people, their families and other involved professionals. The team's skill set is adaptable to the different levels of understanding of our service users in relation to their emotional, behavioural and cognitive development. We recognise the need for an individualised approach as we work with children both in mainstream and specialist provisions.
The key tasks include:
To prove families and other professionals with advice, support, strategies, and skills to promote positive change, usually over a 3 - 6-month period. The uniqueness of the service is that we can offer direct support, as well as modelling of behaviours and strategies within the family home.
To adopt a flexible approach to the needs of the child/young person and family and can therefore arrange our contact with the family accordingly. So, for example this may require visit families early in the morning to support routine and transition or later in the evening for sleep routines.
Our ethos is to empower and enable parents/carers and support children and young people to be independent and reach their full potential. We hope to further strengthen the community-based supports already in place for children, young people and their families. We value a consistent approach for the child or young person and liaise with all involved professionals regularly to review progress.
To offer direct work on specific pre agreed outcomes to try and support the challenges that the child/young person may be facing at home, school and/or other places. These often include challenged around behaviour, sleep, sensory issues, communicating and understanding emotions, independent skill and implementing boundaries and routines, school attendance and transition
We work in a collaborative way with colleagues from other teams and services.
This post is currently homeworking due to the pandemic. Perth & Kinross Council is currently progressing with a hybrid working model offering access to office working on some days/when required. Initially this is on a temporary basis with longer term options becoming available in future. You must have a valid driving licence as this post requires you to travel to a variety of locations across Perth and Kinross.
**The Individual**:
- You must have an HNC in Social Care and SVQ3.
- You must have experience of direct work with children, young people and their families.
- You must have a knowledge and understanding of the health and development needs of children and young people.
- You must have experience of partnership working with colleagues and other professionals.
- You must have a sound understanding of the principles of GIRFEC and how these fit in with your practice.
- You must have a person centred, GIRFEC approach.
- You must be able to demonstrate an understanding of how you can promote the values within the SSSC Codes of Practice for Employees during your work with service-users and their families.
- You must be an effective, considerate communicator at service-user level, understand the use of self, and the relationship between communication and behaviour.
- You must be able to write clearly and accurately for recording and reporting purposes.
- Ideally you should have a working knowledge of alternative communication methods such as Boardmaker, Picture Exchange Communication System and Talking Mats.
- Ideally you should have good ICT skills.
