**JOB DESCRIPTION**:
Deliver sessions designed to educate young people about food and nutrition. You will help young people understand the connections between what they eat and their health. Teach young people, aged 8 to 18 years, in both a secure and residential school setting, to be better prepared for independent living. Young people have the required practical skills and knowledge to choose and prepare food which will be healthy and within budget. Help young people make informed decisions to maintain and improve their physical and mental health. Ensure young people’s voice and participation in service design and delivery takes place and is promoted. Promote the safety and wellbeing of young people through working collaboratively with colleagues and other services within Rossie.
- Working within timetabled sessions, support young people to engage with learning on practical skills for living, including, but not exclusively limited to, food preparation and hygiene, planning and budgeting, and promotion of healthy lifestyle choices.
- Understand and work to lesson plans.
- Ensure that young people’s learning outcomes are evidenced.
- Working alongside Education, Care, Throughcare and Advocacy colleagues, deliver young people engagement sessions which promote young people voice within service design and delivery.
- Adherence to risk assessments and safety plans.

Teach about different aspects of lifestyles including:

- managing money
- family and community relationships
- practical skills required for independent living
- food technology
- health and food policies

Prepare all young people to go on to make positive choices.

Help some young people go on to careers in the health, food production, hospitality, catering or têxtiles industries.

Teach students of different ages and abilities.

Adhere to national guidance set out in a Curriculum for Excellence. This will be based on health and wellbeing and National Qualifications, which you would use when planning your teaching and helping to evidence learning.

In conjunction with a member of GTCS registered teaching staff you would:

- Prepare lessons and teaching materials
- Assess young peoples’ progress and mark their work
- Set homework
- Manage classroom behaviour
- Discuss young peoples' progress with parents and carers
- Organise study trips, social activities and sports events.

You will encourage our young people to take pride in their achievements inside and outside school.

You will support them to build good relationships with other young people and teachers and play a positive part in the life of the school and the local community.

Manage challenging behaviour and build positive relationships

You will need to be imaginative and enthusiastic, being able to bring lessons to life for young people.

You will attend meetings and all mandatory/ role relevant training courses.

You will work closely with colleagues to plan the school’s timetables, and work with other relevant professionals, such as education psychologists and social workers

**PERSON SPECIFICATION**:
**Knowledge Base (Essential)**:

- Awareness of the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence
- Relationship based practice
- Understanding of issues faced by care experienced young people
- Understanding of professional boundaries

**Knowledge Base (Desirable)**:

- Awareness of effective learning and teaching across the curriculum
- Experience of working with young people in a residential or additional support setting
- Pupil engagement and participation
- Allergen awareness
- First aid qualified/ experience
- Trauma and impact on young people
- Children’s rights
- Child protection processes

**Qualifications (Essential)**:

- Level 2 Food hygiene certification, or willingness to achieve this
- Full clean driving license

**Qualifications (Desirable)**:

- Level 3 food hygiene certificate
- HNC social care/SVQ 3

**Experience (Essential)**:

- Previous experience in school or industry relevant to the teaching of Home Economics
- Interaction with young people on a professional, voluntary or personal basis

**Experience (Desirable)**:

- Experience/ Awareness of National Examinations
- Evidence of a wider interest in developing the achievement of pupils
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the need for quality learning and teaching and assessment principles
- Knowledge/experience of care sector

**Skills (Essential)**:

- Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills with both colleagues and young people
- Cookery/ baking skills at a level commensurate with role
- ICT knowledge/ ability and awaren
