**Job Purpose**:

- To deliver a high-quality library and information service, that meets the need of local communities, fosters, and encourages a love of books and reading, and supports lifelong learning.
- To take responsibility for the day-to-day operation and supervision of a designated library service point. This is a lone working role where you will promote a positive, welcoming, and helpful image of library and information services to residents of and visitors to the Scottish Borders
- To take responsibility for the health and safety of all visitors to the library
- Assisting customers with enquiries for the library including access to the library’s collections and digital resources
- Assist with income generation for the service including promotion of any retail stocked in the library, donations, events, group visits and learning opportunities.

**Responsibilities**:

- Carry out day-to-day library routines and processes including the issue, return, shelving and maintenance of library materials, reservations, library member registration and the receipt and control of income, to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services. Manage service provision, prioritizing the demands of front-line service delivery, customer enquiries and readers’ requests and administrative duties as required, taking personal responsibility for achieving high standards of customer care and customer service.
- Be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of the library, ensuring that members of the public adhere to the Library Management Rules and the Live Borders Acceptable Use Policy, taking charge of the library and undertaking key holder duties as required.
- Use and update the library management system ensuring that all transactions and borrower information are recorded accurately and correctly. Process any actions arising from enquiries and requests efficiently and accurately, following normal operating procedures and using a range of computer
- Provide guidance, assistance, and support to enable service users to make best use of ICT facilities, digital resources and learning opportunities. Use initiative to deal flexibly with customers’ enquiries and requests, within the normal operating procedures and policies of the service. Establish the scope and objectives of enquiries with library service users and use relevant techniques and tools to help users find appropriate sources and materials. Use good judgement on whether to deal with queries personally or seek advice from line managers or senior staff, to ensure that customer satisfaction is achieved.
- Help readers and library service users, timeously and efficiently, utilising the full range of resources available and assisting with the delivery of reader development programmes. Liaise with Assistant Librarians to ensure the effective provision, maintenance, development and exploitation of stock, in accordance with the Live Borders Library Service Stock Management policy and contribute to the stock selection process.
- Assist and support new and emergent readers and those with literacy challenges to develop a love of reading and an enjoyment of books.
- Support and/or deliver a range of library events and activities for library users and readers of all ages at Melrose Library. Participate in appropriate project work and activities, and actively contribute to the promotion of library and information services, events and activities, e.g., seasonal events and activities for children; author visits, class visits, IT taster sessions, Bookbug sessions.

- Collect and bank library fines and charges, and other income, reconciling monies with the underlying transaction records. Control and account for any allocated petty cash, and cash floats in accordance with Trust procedures and Financial Regulations
- Ensure the effective management of health, safety and well-being of colleagues, library users and anyone else affected by the work activities, through the implementation of and compliance with health safety and well-being policies, procedures, and arrangements. Carry out annual risk assessments for the building and report any issues to the SHE Portal.
- Build and maintain good working relationships with colleagues within the organisation.
- Comply with, and ensure compliance with, all Live Borders policies and procedures.
