**JOB TITLE**: Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

**RESPONSIBLE TO**: Team Leader, Paediatric Speech and Language therapy

**ACCOUNTABLE TO**: Head of service, Children’s Community services

There are likely to be future opportunities to develop within this role by completing either a foundation apprenticeship to become a band 4 assistant practitioner or completing a degree level apprenticeship to become a qualified Speech and Language Therapist.

The Speech and Language therapy apprenticeship route is currently being developed and will consist of a 4 year degree level course comprised of ‘on the job training’ alongside university academic work. The Speech and Language Therapy apprenticeship course will enable opportunities to start your career pathway and obtain a fully funded degree whilst also receiving a salary. The apprenticeship is mainly by virtual learning and placed based learning in the SLT team on the Fylde Coast. The course which will be fully funded by the Trust and is currently being piloted at Sheffield University, therefore there may be times when the course requires stays away from home to attend week long study blocks which include overnight stays 3 - 4 times a year.

**The post holder will be required to**:

- work within and adhere to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct in conjunction with relevant Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.
- support the clinical therapy work of qualified speech and language therapists
- work under the guidance & direction of qualified speech and language therapists to complete specified tasks
- assist in all aspects of the speech and language therapy assessment and treatment process
- use technical and creative skills to prepare resources & deliver therapeutic interventions for individual patients and groups of patients
- work in the community as a lone worker in line with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Lone Working Policy
- carry out a range of administrative and clerical duties related to the therapy interventions undertaken

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ideally situated just a forty five minute drive from Manchester. The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology patients.

CLINICAL
- To undertake clinical interventions with identified children and young people as directed by a qualified speech and language therapist following a period of training and supervision
- To assist in the assessment of children’s skills and needs through informal assessment and observation
- To undertake individual and / or group treatment using a range of technical and creative skills
- To demonstrate the use of prescribed therapeutic techniques to parents / carers and other professionals
- To provide relevant planned advice and information to parents / carers and other professionals to promote understanding of speech and language development, to help others understand the aims of speech and language therapy and to ensure a consistent, co-ordinated approach to optimise patient care.
- To implement / help others implement aspects of treatment plans
- To develop skills related to a variety of clinical areas; these will be developed through observation, practical experience and continued professional development opportunities such as the Assistant Practitioner development programme.
- To maintain and develop own knowledge, skills and competencies appropriate to the post.
- To undertake nursery and school visits for identified children & young people as recommended by the qualified speech and language therapist responsible for the patient’s care
- To develop a rapport with children and their families to encourage their interest and participation in speech and language therapy interventions
- To work as a lone practitioner within community settings, adhering to all relevant Trust policies and guidelines e.g. Lone Working policy.
