Wakefield, United Kingdom Outwood Grange Academies Trust Full time

**Science Champion, Outwood Grange Academy**

**Salary: L1 - L5**

Are you passionate about supporting and improving science teaching? Are you knowledgeable about pedagogical approaches in science? Do you want the opportunity to help colleagues develop their practice? Then the role of championing science teaching will be for you

The role will build your portfolio of leadership skills enabling you to move into a Head of Department or an SLT role within 2 years. Alternatively you can experience the opportunity of being a Science Champion in another local OGAT academy.

The department delivers courses across all Key Stages 3-5, where we have a thriving Post-16 provision delivering all science A-Levels and Applied Science BTEC Level 3. To do this we have 18 specialist teachers, ably led by a Head of Department, Head of Subjects and Subject Director who support staff and students every week. We also have 4 science technicians and 3 one-to-one science tutors. The department is a combination of experienced staff and more recent entrants to the profession. Teaching takes place in the department’s 15 labs, 1 ICT suite and 2 classrooms. Every lab and classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. All classrooms also have interactive whiteboards. The department consistently achieves above national results, achieving record results in 2022/23, with 70% attaining at least two grade 4s or above and 54% with 2 grade 5s or above, but we still believe we have the potential to be even better.

**About Us**

We are an Outstanding rated, 11-18 academy based in the cathedral city of Wakefield, near Leeds from where the successful Outwood Grange Family was born; a Trust that has supported 41 schools across phases in the North of England.

We have nurtured a school community that is welcoming and friendly, where students and staff can make excellent progress together, with a focus on creating a culture of success, a positive climate for learning, and increased attainment, achievement and social and emotional development.

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are well above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.
