The Bursar's prime purpose is, as a member of the Senior Management Team providing strategic financial advice and professional business management support to the SMT. To support colleagues across all disciplines within the school, to enable the school to meet it's educational and care aims within its business targets.
The schools cater for young people from 8 - 19 years old and offers residential and day placements for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.
The Bursar is responsible for ensuring that administration and support staff work together with teaching and care staff to achieve their joint aims of:
- Achieving the school's business targets.
- Developing principles of best practice through liaison with the education and social service authorities and other external bodies.
- Taking the initiative to meet new situations resulting from legislative changes.
The Bursar has delegated responsibility for all matters financial and administrative including Budget setting and monitoring, Health & Safety co-ordination, on-site personnel matters, facilities management and ancillary services. This is particularly relevant during school holidays when the Bursar may be working with only senior management “on call” as support. They are responsible for promoting the highest standards of business in the ethos of the school and ensuring the most effective use of resources in support of the school's learning objective and care of its pupils.
Reports to: School Principal
Line Manager and Budgetary Responsibilities:
Budget: Advises on £4 million approximately
Direct reports: Office Manager, Premises Manager, Catering and Domestic Managers
Indirect reports: Office, Premises, Catering and Domestic Teams
Key working relationships:
Internal contacts: Senior Managers, working with the School Senior Management Team and directing administrative and ancillary team leaders.
External contacts: Local Education Authorities, Education Funding Agency, Department for Education

Key areas or aspects of delivery might be devolved to other Senior or mid-Management staff but accountability remains with the Bursar.
The Bursar is a full member of the Senior Management Team with the brief to advise the Principal and other members of the team on areas of specific responsibility and participate in the schools strategic planning and development of policy, in particular in relation to the school development plan.
