Historic Places Adviser

Cambridge, United Kingdom Historic England Full time

Summary

We are the public body that looks after England's historic environment.

We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

Are you looking for a role with a purpose? Are you passionate about how historic places can thrive in the 21st century?

Do you have experience in the East of England?

Have you experience in the sustainable development and management of historic places?

Are you good at varying your communication depending on who you are talking with?

Are you ready to make a difference for heritage using urban design and masterplanning skills?

If so then this could be the role for you.

This role offers a variety of flexible working options to enable you to fulfill your career aspirations whilst balancing your personal life, for example, we are open to the post holder doing compressed hours, or flexible start and finish times, hybrid home working and other flexible arrangements to allow you to do accommodate lifestyle factors such as the school run, caring for relatives or other commitments.

As our Historic Places Adviser, you will be the first port of call for masterplanning, neighbourhood planning and conservation area advice in the region. Supported by our multidisciplinary regional team, your advice will be primarily focussed on our High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, Conservation Areas at Risk, Neighbourhood Plans and planning casework involving masterplanning.

The Partnerships Team support local communities (including through local authority partners) in appreciating the significance of their local historic environment and its potential to deliver benefits for the community by: promoting the effective use of the planning system at strategic and local levels; building capacity; engaging with communities to identify opportunities for enhancement; supporting networks; and championing historic places. The Team also supports the Development Advice team.

What you will be doing

As part of this team, the Historic Places Adviser will work with local authorities, partners and local communities to support the development of projects which will improve people’s lives by preserving or enhancing conservation areas, or repurposing and sustaining other heritage assets.

You will make full use of Historic England’s expertise to add value to proposals, so that they can deliver well against government funding scheme criteria and/or national planning policy objectives. You will lead the HE contribution to Neighbourhood Plans in targeted places and will develop partnerships and identifying funding for ‘preserving or enhancing the character or appearance’ of Conservation Areas at Risk and other priorities.

You will also work on occasion with the Development Advice team, particularly where their urban design skills are required, as well as contributing to national and local guidance.

Please note that the role requires regular travel to sites not serviced by public transport. The role may require visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined space (e.g. Church roofs etc). The role will require occasional attendance at community meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.

What we are looking for

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.

We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working, compressed hours working and different working locations, including hybrid working. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.

We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme starting at 26% contributions, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the country, and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.
