Speech and Language Therapist - Clinical Lead - Developmental Language Disorders

Children's Service - Hartlepool, Stockton and Darlington

We have an exciting opportunity available, having created a new post with a focus on Developmental Language Disorders. We are keen to recruit a therapist who is enthusiastic and motivated with a special interest in Developmental Language Disorders.

The role will provide leadership in this clinical area across the service areas of Hartlepool, Stockton and Darlington, leading, coordinating and developing the clinical service for children and young people with a complex and diverse range of communication disorders including developmental language disorder.

**Key responsibilities of this role include**:
1. To lead on the development and coordination of service provision and policy for the clinical area, including pathway development with reference to evidence based practice.

2. To work collaboratively with the Professional Lead for Children’s Therapies, Lead for Children’s SLT, Locality Team Leads and other Clinical Leads to coordinate services across the whole of the children’s service to ensure equitable provision.

3. To ensure that staff at all levels within the children’s SLT team have access to CPD opportunities and supervision in the clinical area at an appropriate level to develop and/or maintain the required skills and competencies to carry out their role.

4. To ensure provision of a highly specialist integrated service to the client group

5. To advise the Professional Lead for Children’s Therapies and Lead for Children’s SLT on service delivery issues relating to the client group, including pressures and shortfalls.

6. To generate appropriate strategies to manage an individual highly specialist caseload including the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge of a diverse range of clients in the clinical area with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties.

7. To develop and implement highly specialist care protocols and programmes of care and treatment, to meet the needs of clients in conjunction with their parents, carers, education staff and other members of the appropriate multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

8. To independently manage and/or negotiate the management of complex cases with others e.g. onward referral to highly specialist clinicians or other specialist support agencies e.g. consultants, psychologists.

9. To ensure clients/families are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible.

10. To adapt practice to meet individual client circumstances including regard for cultural and linguistic differences.

11. To provide highly specialist education, training and supervision to speech and language therapy assistant practitioners, volunteers, and to speech and language therapists with less experience in the management of the client group.

12. To provide highly specialist advice and second opinions to less experienced clinicians.

13. To continually evaluate the effectiveness of care protocols and packages of care, audit and implement changes as appropriate in conjunction with other Clinical Leads / line manager.

14. To continually evaluate clinical effectiveness of intervention with individual clients, negotiate and implement changes.
