Staffordshire & Shropshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme is looking for applicants to support patients with diabetes during their eye screening examination. You will be responsible for Retinal Pre-Screening across various locations in Health Centre’s, Community Hospital locations and in our mobile screening facility working flexibly across Stoke on Trent, South Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Your working week will be 5 days with a Saturday on a shared rota basis. You will support daytime and evening clinics whernecessary. The

The post holder will be responsible for welcoming the patient, recording ocular history, and dilating their pupils using dilation drops to National Standards. You will record your examination on a bespoke database using a laptop computer. You will work closely with clinical and administration team to ensure the smooth running of the clinic and assist admin with appointment bookings.

**WORKING RELATIONSHIPS**:
The post holder will work as part of a team and report to your allocated Team Leader. You would be responsible for the pre-screening of patients who are diagnosed with diabetes who are required to attend for their Diabetic Eye Screening. You will support the screener, checking personal and relevant information. You will undertake and record visual acuity results and insert dilation drops. Patients will attend various locations across Staffordshire & Shropshire, therefore you will be required to work flexibly. An occasional evening and weekend screening clinic will be required.

You will communicate externally with patients and service users, GP practice staff.

**JOB PURPOSE**:

- The post holder will work as part of a team reporting to their appointed Team Leader. You will be first point of contact for patients in clinic and responsible for Pre-screening patients as appropriate and in accordance with National Screening and local policies, protocols and procedures
- The Staffordshire & Shropshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme currently offers annual eye screening for all people with diabetes over the age of 12 years. The service operates from GP surgeries, static screening locations in Health Centres, Hospitals and mobile screening vans.
- You will provide support to your patients to deliver an efficient, patient centred well delivered service. You will ensure patient confidentiality, use your initiative and have a flexible approach. Good communications skills are essential

**KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Gain knowledge of the screening software to ensure patient information is recorded accurately and in accordance with National and local protocols. Accuracy required for updating the patients screening records to reflect current information is essential. You will frequently be required to concentrate, especially in a busy working environment. You workload will be planned and predictable but should be prepared for short notice changes which are unpredictable
- Pre-screen patients recording all essential information such as patient consent, ethnicity, diabetes status, and ocular history. Patients can be concerned and require careful considerate management to deal with ocular problems. Exposure to distressing/emotional circumstances are rare
- Prepare patients for screening by performing visual acuity measurement and instillation of medical eye drops to dilate the pupils. Record the results accurately on bespoke software provided. Understand the implications of dilation drops and when it is not appropriate to use them
