As a Skilled Train Maintaniner you will play a vital role within our Train Care Centres to ensure that trains are properly maintained, prepped and ready to go back into customer service in a timely manner. Duties include but are not limited to carring out maintenance, servicing our trains, fault finding, repairing and to shunt/move trains within our Train Care Centre boundaries.

It’s about working on our Train Care Centres as safely and efficiently as possible. Our trains and Train Care Centres operate 7 days a week, you need to be flexible enough to deal with the ever-changing demands. It’s vital that you’re adaptable and that you live within a 45-minute drive of our Train Care Centre.

You don’t need previous driving experience to fulfil the shunting element of the role, as our training course offers all the training you need. You’ll spend your first 6 weeks taking part in classroom based learning in either Leeds or Manchester, followed by up to 6 months training within our Train Care Centres with our full support as you develop your skills.

**Part of this role will expect you to move trains around the depot, therefore you will have to attend our driver psychometric testing centre in Leeds and Depot Train Driver training course in either Leeds or Manchester.**

If you fancy doing your thing at Northern we’ll expect 100% commitment from you on this rewarding yet demanding programme, but our Training Team will be with you all the way when it comes to ongoing assessments and knowledge checks. You need to be able to work as part of a team and maintain optimum concentration at all times. You must also be qualified with a level 3 NVQ or a recognised apprenticeship and have the experience and practical ability of electrical and mechancial systems.

We are looking for reliable, and hardworking individuals to fulfil this role and you must be willing to work outside, as well as on board our trains, throughout the year. You also need to have excellent communication skills and excellent decision making. What’s really important is an ability to work to instructions nad rules and regulations and to think on your feet in sometimes difficult situations.
