Apex & Change Lead

Thames Water is by some margin the largest of the Water and Sewerage Companies (WaSCs). We serve 15 million customers, getting on for a quarter of the country’s population. We deliver life's essential service so our customers, communities and the environment can thrive and operate across a huge geographical footprint. Our aspiration is to restore Thames Water to its rightful position as one of the leading companies. Our Turnaround Plan does not try to do everything at once, everywhere, but establishes a step-by-step approach, focusing in the first instance on those areas of performance which matter most to our customers and our stakeholders and is the foundation on which we will build the recovery.
As part of our refocused Turnaround Plan, one of the core initiatives to build foundational capability is the establishment of an agile process excellence capability (APEX). Thames Water are establishing an APEX core team and capability to support and accelerate the priority Turnaround initiatives and to build the culture and capability for continuous improvement for the long term. Initially, the APEX team will focus primarily on providing:
- Hands-on improvement expertise as part of turnaround initiative teams. For example, helping to shape the improvement approach, embedding agile ways of working, problem solving, methods & tools, and delivering the required change.
- Process intelligence and root cause analysis. For example, value stream analysis, process mining, simulation/modelling, experience flow mapping, driver analysis.
- Skills transfer and training. For example, foundational training in agile ways of working, change acceleration methods, problem solving and more advanced training as applicable.
- Pod Activation. Embedding the ways of working, routines and rigour within the agile improvement pods which exist in selected turnaround initiatives.
The role of the APEX and change lead will be to build the team with the right mix of specialist skills, expertise and experience to provide highly effective support to the Turnaround initiatives, and to ensure the resources are deployed in the most impactful way. This will include building strong relationships with Initiative Leads and Sponsors and establishing a deep understanding of the initiative outcomes and objectives - thereby targeting support and skills transfer efficiently and effectively.
The goal is to embed new ways of working in a way that will build the right cross-functional capability of our people to proliferate change, as well as the right cross-functional processes to support and accelerate the execution of our turnaround and beyond. We are looking for a highly motivated, independent and goal-oriented leader for this role who can inspire cross-functional change and collaboration in a large company environment to drive achievement of outcomes.
**What you’ll be doing as APEX & Change Lead**
- Leads ‘Agile Process Excellence’ (APEX) capability and initiative and drives the end-to-end delivery of the targeted outcomes and objectives, acting as a thought leader, coaching colleagues on development of an agile mindset and key aspects of agile such as development of OKRs.
- Supports company-wide communication, best practice sharing and knowledge transfer to develop a culture of continuous, agile process improvement and excellence.
- Manages the initiative scope, goals, and deliverables, ensuring they are achievable and measurable, with relevant KPIs in place. Scope will include, as a minimum, development of APEX capabilities, tools and standards (scaled to programme demand), key process identification and improvement/optimisation.
- Creates and manages APEX initiative plans, resource plans, budgets, KPIs and dependencies. Provides regular status updates and prepares Executive level reports as required.
- Create and maintain Tools, Frameworks, Methods and Practices to enable both Right Capability and Right Process outcomes.
- Defines, matures and embeds the APEX and approach, working alongside programme governance structures and in collaboration with the TMO leadership who will define priorities and ensure overall alignment.
- Works with initiative leads to ensure new ways of working lead to _sustainable_ process changes once the individual Turnaround initiatives are complete.
- Build, develop and maintain effective relationships with communities of practice, in agile process excellence tools, techniques and learning.
- Utilise process mining and similar tools to demonstrate value opportunity, with priority process transparency and securing business case support for addressing and delivering the best opportunities.
- Flexible to travel when required to support Turnaround initiative activities.
