**Main purpose of the role**:
The role of support worker is varied and this document is intended to describe the main functions of the role. This job description is not exhaustive and the support each service user will require will vary depending on individual need and ability. Applicants should consider this document as a guide to the role and tasks that may or will be required and they may be required to carry out, in a timely and efficient manner, any other reasonable task or duty that is requested.
All support workers should be aware of the need to work to agreed care plans, as well as adhering to
Aspire’s policies and procedures. All employees have a duty of care to others under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 1974.
The role of support worker begins and ends with caring for people who are in need of care and support - people who do not have a genuine interest in supporting and caring for vulnerable people cannot be considered as suitable for this role. Individual service users will have specific areas in which they require support which may include some or all of the duties outlined below.
**Key duties and responsibilities**:
- **To provide safe, efficient and effective care to service users**:
To ensure that service users are supported with personal hygiene needs ensuring their privacy and dignity of the person at all times.
To ensure that any changes in need are reported and documented within the service users care plan.
To ensure that the health and wellbeing of service users is monitored and to ensure that medical advice is sought should there be any form of health concern.
To support service users in the achievement of their personal goals through structured planning.
To safeguard service users from harm and abuse and to report any concerns of abuse to the appropriate people either internally or externally.
To ensure that medication is ordered, checked and safely stored and to support service users to administer their medication or to ensure that medication is administered in accordance with company policy and legislation / guidance.
To support service users with continence management.
- **To support service users to maintain and increase their independence**
To ensure that all service users are supported with nutritional needs, meal planning and preparation.
To support service users to maintain a clean, tidy and hygienic environment either in their own tenancies or in a shared home.
To aid service users to obtain any aids and adaptations that will enhance their safety and independence.
To support service users in the use of public transport.
To help service users to launder and iron their clothing.
- **To communicate effectively**:
To communicate with service user using their preferred method of communication
To liaise in a professional with family members, social workers, health professionals and all other stakeholders involved with individual service users, sharing information that the service user has agreed to or is in their best interests, on a need to know basis.
To handover any relevant information to senior support workers.
To seek advice and report concerns to a line manager / manager on call as required.
To complete daily log book, the communication log and any other documentation relevant to the service in a clear and concise manner, observing the Data Protection Act 1998 and
Aspire’s confidentiality policy.
- **Finance management**:
To support service users to manage their personal monies ensuring that all transactions are recorded thoroughly.
To aid service users in personal budgeting.
To use Company money (i.e. petty cash) in a prudent manner, obtaining receipts for all payments.
To ensure that service users are enable to use loyalty card schemes should they choose to.
- **Support to achieve a meaningful lifestyle**:
To ensure that opportunities for leisure, social and educational activities are discussed and pursued as required.
To support service users with their spiritual needs - including attendance at a place of worship.
To act as a key-worker for a service user, ensuring that their goals and aspirations are discussed and recorded.
