Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

A summary of the main job duties and responsibilities is provided below:
The successful applicant will join colleagues to continue the development of improved delivery of emergency care to the acutely ill medical patient within the settings of the Emergency Floor at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

This post may involve the review of medical patients in short stay unit (Bryn North), assessment wards (MAU and Lowton) acute medical take (A&E in reach) and Same Day Emergency Care Unit.

Each day there is a formal morning ward round of all medical patients by acute physicians. Then throughout the day patients are reviewed as they arrive with the junior doctors.

The acute physicians also provide senior cover for the Same Day Emergency Care area that accepts ambulatory GP referrals direct to an organised clinic environment.

The acute physicians are part of a large team providing unscheduled care and are supported by the general physicians in overnight on call and weekends on call rota.

Acute Physicians provide linear consultant presence on assessment areas from 0800 to 20:30.

In addition, there are gastroenterology and cardiology in-reach teams providing daily review of complex patients.

Post holder will also do one evening shift (1600 to 20:30) per week as a part of weekday acute medicine rota.

There is daily support from specialist nurses in several specialties including Oncology, Alcohol, Cardiology, Diabetes and Palliative care.

Social support is provided by the Access to community service team (ACST). Hospital at home provides opportunities for continuing some treatment including IV treatment after discharge.

Currently there are three acute medicine clinics each week. This provides an alternative to admission or visit to SDEC and allows follow up of investigations and treatment of patients discharged early.
