We are looking for an enthusiastic, friendly, and reliable team player to join the Musculoskeletal Outpatient team as a therapy assistant at Aintree Hospital which is part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT). Part of the role will be working within our Hydrotherapy service.

Our musculoskeletal team are a motivated, warm and friendly. Our services include our Musculoskeletal Assessment Service, general MSK outpatients, rehabilitation following injury or surgery and Hydrotherapy (rehabilitation in a pool to support recovery). We support the recovery of large number of outpatients from our local population and refer on for an Orthopaedic/Rheumatology opinion where appropriate.

Our Therapy Assistants work alongside Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in assisting patients in their rehabilitation and recovery from various injuries and conditions. We aim to optimise independence and improve quality of life.

To provide support under the supervision of a qualified clinician.

To assist in the delivery of care to meet an individual’s health and wellbeing needs.

To ensure effective communication with patients, carers, and all other professionals. This will include patients who may have communication difficulties.

To correctly undertake basic assessment and treatment procedures, which have been delegated obtaining verbal consent before doing so.

To recognise improvements or deterioration in a patient’s condition and report it to a supervisor and document the change.

To complete administrative tasks to maintain effective running of the service.

To maintain accurate records in the form of electronic notes in line with Trust standards and guidelines.

To maintain and demonstrate adequate levels of competence in the assessment and treatment of patients.

To assist the hydrotherapy physiotherapy team with poolside support as well as supporting treatment in the pool.

To assist in gym based classes and individualised treatment programmes.

To prepare therapeutic materials as required and maintain stock levels.

To maintain hygiene and cleanliness of clinical areas.

To support and promote our safety culture.

To report and accidents, complaints, defects in equipment, near misses and untoward incidents following Trust procedure.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Clinical

Under the instruction of the qualified Therapist assist in carrying out care and exercise programmes with patients in a manner that respects people’s abilities, privacy, dignity and individuality.

Treat patient individually or in a group in a variety of settings with supervision from the qualified Therapist e.g. outpatient department and hydrotherapy.

To liaise regularly with the qualified Therapist regarding treatment progression and ongoing care. Reporting to Therapist any lack of progression or negative changes in patients ability to undertake treatment session.

To work as a member of the therapy team and multidisciplinary team, sharing information with team members.

Issue, fit and retrieve Therapy equipment under the supervision of a qualified Therapist in ward or home setting keeping accurate records of this activity.

Ensure equipment within department is clean and fit for its purpose.

Support patients to access and use toilet facilities.

To receive and prepare patients for therapy treatments.

To prepare and maintain equipment and Therapy treatment areas including household duties.

To ensure effective internal and external two-way communication with patients, carers and all other health and social care professionals regarding aspects of patient care, providing and receiving complex information which requires empathy and reassurance, communicating where there may be barriers to understanding.

Maintain accurate and timely records of treatments as directed by the qualified Therapist.

To order therapy equipment and supplies under the direction of Technical Instructor/Therapist and authorised signatories.

To participate in departmental planned out of hours working (optional)
