**Verger**

**Job Title**:Verger

**Line Manager**:Head Verger

**Hours**: 35 hours per week on shift rota over seven days a week

**Salary**: £22,196 per annum plus overtime where necessary

**Job Summary**:
To work as part of a team assisting with the day-to-day organisation of the Cathedral and ancillary buildings. The role will include basic facilities management including setting up of the Cathedral and meeting rooms, including furniture moves and organising the provision of refreshments, operation of the sound and lighting systems, as well as cleaning of the buildings. The Verger must be willing to work to a flexible rota, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, which may include Christmas and Easter as arranged by the Head Verger.

**Specific Tasks**:

- To assist other members of the team, and the wider Cathedral community, with the preparation of services (training will be provided).
- To operate the audiovisual, sound, streaming and lighting systems (training will be provided).
- To arrange chairs and furnishings for special occasions, put up and take down platforms/staging, and provide general assistance for special events (training will be provided).
- To provide safe handling of monies from collecting boxes.
- To assist in the cleaning and maintenance of the interior, ancillary buildings and immediate surroundings, and the furnishings, of the Cathedral.
- To assist the wider Cathedral team with the organisation of evening events, special services, concerts etc. as required.
- To be a welcoming face to the Cathedral and assist visitors with their needs and questions.
- Ensuring the Cathedral is kept in pristine condition and fit for use including replenishment of items such as candles, wafers and wine etc.
- Opening of the Cathedral and associated building and ensuring it is securely locked after use.

**General**:

- To support the smooth running of the Vergers’ department and Cathedral activities.
- To attend and participate in training courses as directed.
- To undertake any other reasonable tasks, relevant to the post.

**Person Specification**

**Essential**:

- An awareness of health and safety procedures.
- An ability to communicate at all levels.
- An ability to work at height when required (training will be provided).
- An ability to work alone as well as within a team.
- A flexible approach to working including extra hours (for which overtime is provided).
- Willing to be “hands-on” and proactive.
- IT competent with packages such as MS Office
- Empathy with the mission and values of the Cathedral.

**Desirable**:

- A first aid qualification (although training can be arranged)
- DIY skills
- There is not a genuine occupational requirement for the post-holder to be a committed Christian, however due to the nature of the role you need to be in sympathy with the work of the Church of England and be willing to take part in services.
