**Responsibilities**:
Main purpose of job

To be responsible to the Operations Supervisor through the relevant front line supervisor as appropriate the Recycling Operative will undertake, usually as a member of a small team, a variety of duties connected with the collection of recyclable materials from a variety of premises, for delivery to an appropriate location. Duties will be undertaken within specified area/areas as appropriate and incorporating the use of the full range of refuse collection containers, associated collection equipment and vehicles.

The Recycling Operative will also be required to undertake other refuse collection or street cleansing duties as required, when not involved in recycling operations.
Summary of responsibilities and personal duties

1. To work according to routes as specified by management.

2. To start and finish at the appropriate depot daily and in all weather undertake collection of recyclable materials from appropriate premises as directed, including assisted lifts.

3. To ensure that all collections are carried out with due regard to property and with minimum disturbance to members of the public, hence bins, etc should be emptied and returned to their proper location and undamaged, lids should be replaced, appropriate mechanical aids should be used where access permits, spillages must be cleared up, gates should be closed.

4. To operate any collection systems as required (for example, bin, box, etc) including bin lifts containing bin weighing equipment, vehicle safety equipment, bins with data chips, etc and to report to management any defects to such equipment in a timely manner and to assist new employees in the use of such equipment.

5. To undertake any inspection process required to ensure that materials presented for recycling are not contaminated by non appropriate materials, this will include both pre and post emptying of the receptacle.

6. To assist with the collation of data relating to individual premises including the use of any computerised or manual data capture systems and to present any necessary reports as required.

7. To undertake appropriate measures to identify premises not adhering to proper procedures for presenting materials for recycling, for example, contamination, not suitably presented, not leaving out receptacle, etc and providing the necessary reports on such premises as required.

8. To carry out any required processes necessary to inform the occupiers of premises who are not adhering to proper procedures for presenting materials for recycling.

9. To assist as required with any promotional activities designed to encourage the public to recycle, including personal contact with the public, leaflet drops, attachment of bin stickers, etc and assist with any public survey work as required.

10. To report back to the Operations Supervisor, on completion of the daily route, any premises or streets where collection has not been completed on the prescribed day for whatever reason.

11. To report any collections from any new additional premises identified in the relevant collection area, to the Operations Supervisor.

12. To adhere to the principles and all instructions in relation to Health and Safety legislation, especially covering the wearing of appropriate protective and reflective clothing, safety footwear and other PPE; the safe lifting of heavy objects, etc and ensuring the safety of the public and other council staff where appropriate.

13. To assist the driver in the safe manoeuvring of the vehicle on the round.

14. To assist with snow clearance and gritting of footways as required.

15. To undertake other duties such as refuse collection and street sweeping and associated functions, when not required for Recycling Operations.

16. To take part in all required service, departmental and corporate training activities as required.

17. To empty all types of receptacle and lift all loose waste, as required, ensuring the safe collection and disposal of waste.

18. To ensure that all work is carried out to the required service standards.

19. To use radio and other telecommunication facilities as required.

20. To comply with any reasonable request as may be made from time to time by the Operations Manager (Waste Collection and Fleet).

21. To carry out the duties of the post in such a manner as to safeguard and enhance the profile of the company whilst adhering to the principal of high levels of customer care.
