The Role

Based in the School of Pharmacy you will participate fully in the School’s range of teaching and research activities. You should have experience of teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students and be able to contribute specialist knowledge relevant to medicinal chemistry within a pharmacy provision that complements the growing teaching and research interests of the School. We are particularly interested in attracting individuals who are pharmacists and have experience of working within a School of Pharmacy or equivalent industrial experience.

We would like to consider academics who are able to teach medicinal chemistry, but may have a primary research interest in another area of pharmaceutical science, relevant to the School’s research focus. Applicants should contact the Head of School to discuss this in more detail if they would like clarification on what is expected within the role from both a teaching and research perspective.

Key Accountabilities
- To offer specialist expertise in a contemporary area of medicinal chemistry
- To undertake teaching, leadership and supervision duties across a range of the School programmes, initially with a focus on the medicinal chemistry components of the MPharm and the MRes in Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine programme
- To undertake administrative duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant School and Faculty committees and activities
- To participate in external activity related to pharmacy, learning and teaching, and research
- To contribute to the promotion of undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy programmes to both current and prospective students
- To act as a personal tutor to a group of students, concerned with students’ academic achievements, and pastoral care
- To contribute to the research strategy of the School and link with other University groups to maximise the income and impact around that work
- To contribute to University administration, course planning, curriculum development, the recruitment of students, engage in teaching and scholarly activities and programme leadership
- To participate in relevant staff development activities
- To undertake other duties, such as participation in School, Faculty and University meetings, as detailed by the Head of School

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Expertise in a contemporary area of medicinal chemistry, relevant to an MPharm programme
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Creativity and innovation
- Ability to work well on own initiative and as part of a team
- Excellent organisational, administrative and planning skills
- Experience of teaching medicinal chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Experience in the supervision of undergraduate, and postgraduate dissertation students, commensurate with career stage
- Specialist knowledge and interest in an area relevant to the pharmaceutical science strand of an MPharm programme
- Track record in publishing in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with career stage
- Evidence of successful research grant acquisition, commensurate with career stage; and
- Evidence of a coherent research strategy and appropriate alignment with School and Faculty priorities

Desirable
- Understanding of current themes and issues in the delivery of accredited MPharm programmes
- Experience of supervision of PhD students to successful conclusion; and
- Understanding and experience in processes involved in module and programme development and leadership
