Applications are invited for a substantive 10 PA posts as a consultant paediatrician with an interest in neonatology. This replacement posts due to retirement. The successful applicant will join six other consultants with neonatal interests in delivering our high quality neonatal service, as the on-call rota has split from general paediatrics on call. The post incorporates neonatal service weeks, and neonatal and general paediatric outpatient clinics. The new post holder would contribute to resident evening sessions on the Paediatric Assessment Unit.

The Dyson Centre for Neonatal care is designated as a Local Neonatal Unit and operates within the South West Neonatal ODN. It has 21 cots; 4 of these are designated for intensive care and 3 high dependency. There are approximately 5000 deliveries per year. Extremely preterm infants < 27 weeks and infants requiring surgical or cardiology support are transferred to Bristol with whom we have close working relationships as our local tertiary centre.

DCC includes 0.5 PA per week additional NICU DCC to enable participation in Monday joint rounds, and ad hoc clinical involvement.

In addition to acute service weeks and outpatient clinics, this post would incorporate ‘Advice and Guidance’ sessions, as well as scope to practice or develop an interest in another area that complements the team, and this would be welcomed.

1. Neonatal unit service

The post-holder will contribute to neonatal unit service doing weeks 6 weeks per year.

This post will join six other paediatric consultants with an interest in neonatology in running the neonatal service during weekdays. This includes a weekly unit round involving several neonatal consultants; delivery suite and NICU cover; post-natal ward and transitional care responsibility; antenatal consults; and clinical supervision.

The neonatal consultants also offer informal advice and support with complex cases in infants under 1 month on the paediatric ward. The tertiary services in Bristol are available to discuss cases and arrange transfer whenever appropriate. All babies on the unit are discussed with the neonatal consultants in Friday afternoon handover to consolidate management plans for the weekend.

3. Outpatient clinics

The Trust runs a rolling week A, B, C, D system to allocate clinics (rather than 2ndTuesday of the month etc.). The post holder will do an average of 2.25 general paediatric clinics a week when not on service (nine clinics per 4 week cycle). The post holder will undertake some neonatal follow-up clinics together with other members of the neonatal team as part of this clinic quota.

If the applicant has, or would like to develop, additional areas of expertise that complement the team, this would also be encouraged. There would be opportunity to develop special interest clinics, joint clinics with tertiary colleagues from Bristol, and / or transition clinics with colleagues from adult medicine. These would be included in clinic count above, replacing general paediatric clinics.
4. On-Call

With recruitment to these posts, the neonatal on-call rota will be shared between a total of 6.8 WTE paediatricians with on-call commitment being proportionate to number of PAs in the job plan. Therefore this post will have a non-resident on call commitment of approximately 3 weekday nights per month (Monday to Friday) and 8 weekends per year.
