**Royal Southampton Yacht Club (“RSYC”)**

**Job Description ~ Bosun**

**1. OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE OF THE JOB**

The role of the Bosun is split between:

- Providing a Water Taxi and a Pontoon management service to Members of RSYC, in a courteous and civil manner. Often the Bosun will be the first point of contact for Members and visitors.
- undertake various tasks maintaining designated assets, the Clubhouse and grounds of the Club.
- To be an Ambassador for the RSYC.

The visible focus of the job is providing the smooth operation of the waterside activities and a high level of service to Members, but the maintenance of the assets is equally important.

**2. ATTRIBUTES NEEDED FOR THE JOB**

The Bosun is expected to be proactive in carrying out the duties of the role, as often the it is undertaken without supervision.

The RSYC has a small Team where all Staff are expected to work together and support each other, in order to cover all the tasks required for the smooth running of the Club. Therefore, the Bosun must have good interpersonal skills and self-management ability to balance the various requirements.

**3. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES**

**3.1 PONTOON**
- To facilitate the use of the Pontoon by Members and visitors in accordance with the Club instructions and by directing Members and visitors as to when and where to moor, in order to make best use of the Pontoon.
- To efficiently operate the pre-payment system for all Pontoon visits and monitor the CCTV to ensure all overnight Mooring Fees are collected.
- To be the lead contact for Rallies, ensuring appropriate payments are collect in accordance with Club guidance.
- To liaise with Clubhouse Staff regarding the movement of boats and to immediately report any difficulties or perceived difficulties.
- To maintain the Pontoon, equipment, and Walkway in a clean and tidy state, rectifying where possible any defects and reporting any found defects to the Business Manager and Rear Commodore House.
- To carry out and record the safety and maintenance checks of the Club’s Tenders, Dinghies and other equipment, as set out in the agreed procedures, rectifying any defects when possible and ensure that they are serviceable at the beginning and end of each shift. Report any unresolved issues to the Business Manager and Rear Commodore House.

**3.2 DORY (**_**Sea Echo**_**)**
- Responsible for the operation and day to day maintenance and cleanliness of the Club Dory with the support of the relevant Committee.
- Carry out and record safety checks in accordance with the agreed procedures.
- Operate the Water Taxi service for Members and visitors during the times stipulated, in a safe and efficient manner consistent with good seamanship. At busy periods or whilst undertaking maintenance tasks, communicate to Members and visitors the time it will take to arrive. The Bosun should endeavour to react within a maximum time of 15 minutes. Also, to always comply with local and International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea, paying particular attention to By-laws issued by the Beaulieu River Harbour Authority.
- Report any maintenance problems to the Club Officers, as necessary.
- Ensure the Dory is always moored securely and safely, particularly when it is not manned.
- Purchase fuel from dealers authorised by the Club and retain receipts.
- Ensure the Dory is immobilised at the end of each working day and for periods of non-operation.
- Ensure the number of passengers carried does not exceed the design capacity of the Dory.

**3.3 DINGHIES, KAYAKS & PADDLEBOARDS**
- Carry out and record the safety and maintenance checks of the Club Dinghies and other equipment as set out in the agreed procedures. Correct if able or report any issues to the Club Officers.
- Ensure that the Club sailing/boating equipment is clean, stored under covers, emptied of rainwater, washed off with fresh water regularly and is ready for use by Members.
- Monitor and control the use by Members of the Club water side equipment, ensuring that all equipment is returned, cleaned, and safely stored.

**3.4 CLUBHOUSE & GROUNDS**
- Attend to the Ensign and Burgee as appropriate, morning and evening, in accordance with the usual Flag Etiquette and to the meet the specific requirements of Flag Officers.
- Set the Tide Indicators and the Barometer each morning.
- Maintain the Club storage container and other outdoor storage, ensuring that items are stored safely and correctly and keeping these spaces in a clean and tidy condition.
- Maintain all the areas belonging to the Club and the floor of Indoor Gear Store in a clean and tidy condition.
- Allocate Dinghy and Tender spaces and ensure that Dinghies and Tenders stored in the grounds are in the allocated space. Also keep those areas clean and tidy.
- Cutting the grass and keeping the grounds in good order, advising the Business Manager and Rear Commodore House of any works that may be required by contractors.
