**Job Title: Building Control Specialist**

**Salary: Grade 7 £42,296 - £46,503 (including supplement of £4,000) Plus a further £3,000 Golden Hello is available to new employees.**

**Hours: Full time (37 hours)**

We are looking for enthusiastic and highly self-motivated qualified Building Control professionals to work within the Building Control discipline of our Service Delivery Specialist Team here at South Somerset District Council.

From April 2023, Somerset will become a Unitary Authority. South Somerset Building Control and Somerset Building Control Partnership will be combining to create a single Local Authority Building Control department covering the whole of the new Somerset Council.

The new Somerset Council will provide Building Control services across areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Exmoor, the Quantock Hills, the Blackdown Hills, the Mendips and the Somerset Levels and coastline; along with the historic towns of Bridgwater, Burnham, Bruton, Chard, Castle Cary, Crewkerne, Glastonbury, Frome, Ilchester, Minehead, Somerton, Taunton, Wellington, Wincanton Yeovil and the City of Wells.

We are looking for qualified Building Control professionals to deal with plans examination; inspection of works in progress and control of demolitions and dangerous structures; all in accordance with the proper discharge of the Council’s duties and powers under The Building Act 1984 and other allied legislation, and to include the support and promotion of the local authority service.

Ensuring that new building developments and alterations to existing buildings, including residential, industrial, retail, schools, hospitals, theatres and sports establishments meet the requirements of Building Regulations and provide a fire safe, healthy and safe environment for persons in and about those buildings.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Conduct site inspections of works in progress for compliance with Building Regulations under Full Plans, Building Notice and Regularisation procedures. Produce and maintain electronic records of site works which includes the production of letters, notifications, reports, completion certificates and other documents on the document storage system.
- Regarding potentially dangerous structures, attend emergency callouts (includes out of hours) responding to requests from Emergency Services, determining the scale and nature of emergency measures to make them and the public safe including issuing Statutory and demolition notices.
- Market the Building Control Service to attract additional business to help support the self-financing service. Develop close working relationships with customers to help in retaining their business in the future.
- Maintain a satisfactory record of continuing professional development, undertaking training necessary to personal and professional development. To contribute to service improvement through meeting service objectives and performance targets.

**Essential Criteria - Qualifications and Experience**
- Degree, HNC or degree equivalent in a construction related discipline.
- Membership of a professional body such as RICS, CABE or CIOB.
- Previous Building Control experience, either with a local authority or a private organisation.
- The ability to exercise judgement, make balanced assessments using standard technical guidance along with specialist knowledge to put forward rational, evidence-based recommendations.
- The ability to undertake all necessary site inspections, surveys and meetings away from the office. In addition to be able to climb ladders, work in confined spaces and capable of entering a typical construction site environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, sufficient to write technical reports and associated correspondence.
- Writes clearly, succinctly and correctly; in a well-structured and logical way; Uses technology to achieve work objectives.
- Applies specialist and detailed technical experience; develops job knowledge and further expertise through continual professional development.
