The Role

We are recruiting for a newly created position at our Waste Treatment Plant in Newport, Isle of Wight. The welder will be responsible for planning, organising and undertaking corrective and reactive work and be responsible for delivering improvement projects leading to increased plant reliability and cost reduction. In addition, they will ensure that all repairs and maintenance work is carried out with the highest regard to safety, to a high standard and in a cost-effective manner. The welder performs preventive maintenance inspection (PMI), troubleshoots, repairs, and rebuilds major components on compactors and containers. Ensures accurate diagnosis and effective repair and/or replacement of components.

Key responsibilities
- Use specialized machinery for industrial welding and oversee machines that perform the same job.
- Follow and enforce strict safety regulations such as wearing heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes.
- Monitor machinery for appropriate usage and temperature.
- Weld components in flat positions.
- Operates drill presses, power saws, grinders, positioners and a variety of welding equipment and hand tools. May also perform minor operations on metal lathes and milling machines where applicable.
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
- Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
- Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
- Manage and maintain the main workshop and adjacent areas, ensuring the area is kept clean and tidy.
- Performs basic non-destructive inspection techniques.

Carryout sitewide material thickness measurement

The Person
- Completed apprenticeship (NVQ Level 3) in appropriate engineering discipline.
- HNC, City & Guilds or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
- Experience working within a processing, manufacturing or similar environment
- Specific waste industry experience, MRF / MPT / Polymers would be advantageous
- Knowledge of CMMS systems, purpose and functionality
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a welder

**Skills**:

- Outstanding attention to detail
- Good understanding of a proactive maintenance strategy and condition monitoring
- Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft office systems
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of electrical systems and safety

Technical competences
- Excellent knowledge of welding machinery, electrical equipment, and manual tools.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and designs.
- Knowledge of welding techniques (electric arc, MIG, TIG and plasma cutting), tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of non-destructive inspection techniques.
- Confined Space or able to undertake training.
- Knowledge of welding techniques (electric arc, MIG, TIG
- Awareness of Environmental, Health & Safety regulations and their impacts

Our Business
At Thalia Waste Management, we use state-of-the-art technology to make the most of rubbish and reduce the amount being sent to landfill. From recycling materials; composting; and mechanical biological treatment to energy from waste (EfW) facilities creating better environments. In a single year we process 300,000 tonnes of waste that is turned into energy. This generates the same amount of energy as approximately 600 million solar panels. Similarly we recycle circa 95,000 tonnes of waste. Both Milton Keynes and North Yorkshire bring together three different technologies on one site - mechanical treatment, anaerobic digestion and EfW. This allows us to extract any organic and recyclable materials (such as plastic and metals) which have been placed in with general, non-recyclable waste before using the rest to create energy. In Cambridgeshire we offer a range of treatment capabilities from our 400-acre Waterbeach Waste Management Park, providing services as part of partnerships with local authorities and directly for businesses and residents.
