We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and flexible Transfusion Practitioner to join our transfusion team. In return we can offer you a varied and interesting daily workload from teaching, competency assessment, auditing, investigating incidents/reactions etc. The transfusion team manages the transfusion requirements trust wide ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Ensuring safe practice and patient safety is maintained.

You will need to be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of the Blood Transfusion Regulations and have a proven track record of experience within this scope of practice. Experience of teaching and training will also be required

You will play a key role in training, development and supporting the Blood Transfusion Service within the Trust. You must have at least 3 years post graduate registration and recent experience and knowledge of blood component transfusions and have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills. You will be required to help implement, support and ensure safe practice trust wide with regards to Blood component transfusions. The post will involve a very high proportion of multi-professional teaching and competency assessment, enthusiasm for and previous experience of teaching is an advantage.

Flexibility in hours of duty and approach to this task is vital. Previous experience of implementing training and audit would be an asset; however the right applicant will be supported with any development needs. The applicant must have a genuine interest in transfusion and improving practice within the trust.

This is a full time or job share band 6 position as a Transfusion Practitioner

The post holder will work as an integral member of the Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT) and in conjunction with the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC).

She/He will work with the Transfusion Specialist Practitioner with support from the Lead Clinician for Transfusion, the Blood Transfusion Dept manager and the Lead BMS for Transfusion.

The post holder will be instrumental in multi-professional teaching and competency assessment in transfusion, preventing blood product wastage, auditing blood product usage and its appropriate use. The post will involve a very high proportion of teaching and competency assessment.

She/He will work with the Transfusion Specialist Practitioner by leading co-ordination of competency-based transfusion-training programs to nursing/midwifery, medical (including Medical Students) and multi-professional staff (within the Hospital, satellite trusts and external educational organizations) involved in any aspect of the transfusion process. Previous experience of teaching and competency assessment is an advantage as this will the highest proportion of your work.

The post holder should be able to work independently and across disciplines as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential including ability to communicate with peers and senior staff and clinical users of the service.

She/he will have a clear understanding of legal transfusion requirements and local/national transfusion requirements, enabling the Trust to meet service demands and strategic targets. The post holder will work within national policy frameworks and guidelines i.e. NICE, BSH, BSQR, NBTC and perform transfusion related competency based assessments as required

Recent experience (within the last year) of clinical transfusion or laboratory transfusion is a must.
