It is MiMH's intention that this job description is a guide to the major areas and duties for which the jobholder is accountable. However, services will change and the jobholder’s obligations might vary and develop, so the job description should be seen as a guide and not as a permanent, definitive and exhaustive statement._
**Background**
This is an exciting and relatively new Crisis Café based in Hatfield, working in partnership with Herts Mind Network and their wider NightLight Mental Health Crisis Services providing urgent support, crisis intervention and emotional support to people experiencing mental health distress in Hertfordshire as an alternative to statutory pathways.
The objectives of the service include:
- To improve the mental wellbeing of people experiencing mental health crisis in Hertfordshire
- To provide support to clients accessing the service for instance: signposting, de-escalation, planned wellbeing activities etc.
- To contribute to an improvement in individual mental wellbeing
- To remain a source of independent support
- To treat the people who use our services with respect, dignity and personalised support
- To raise awareness of mental health services available with the goal to improve long term mental health and reduce social isolation
- To increase self-management skills of those accessing the service
- To reduce the use of emergency and statutory mental health services whilst experiencing crisis.
**Purpose of Post**
To be a key member of staff delivering the Mental Health Crisis Service, offering a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment outside of normal working hours for those who feel in mental distress or crisis. The role will involve assessing needs and delivering appropriate practical and emotional support to people accessing the service to enable them to begin the process of improving their mental health and wellbeing; this will also involve signposting and onward referrals to wider support services and pathways available in the area. This role will work closely with the wider team both at Mind in Mid Herts (MiMH) but also Herts Mind Network (HMN) to ensure services are of the highest quality and support the continued growth of the service. The role will be majority out of hours working, mirroring the opening times of HMN’s NightLight provision with the need to work some daytimes to attend meetings and necessary training.
**Principal Responsibilities**
- To increase early access to help for people experiencing mental health crisis in Hertfordshire
- To facilitate an alternative pathway to people in distress and crisis to support better outcomes and reduce the demand on statutory crisis and emergency services, which will include liaising with external agencies such as police, the Ambulance Service, Accident & Emergency staff, Mental Health Liaison Teams etc., with regard to accepting referrals
- To assess and develop flexible and realistic crisis support plans in collaboration with the people accessing the service that takes into account their individual needs, encouraging positive steps towards self-management of crisis and recovery
- To work with people to ensure a clear pathway of support is available, developing sound knowledge of local resources to support in enabling appropriate referrals/signposting where necessary
- Providing immediate advice, information, practical and emotional support for people presenting in emotional distress and crisis
- Proactively recognising the indicators of deteriorating mental health and facilitating appropriate action, de-escalating and mitigating risks, and liaising with relevant agencies if needed
- Maintaining accurate records on the Client Recording Management system, detailing interventions, outcomes and any further actions, follow ups etc. and contributing to reports to meet monitoring requirements
- To maintain communication with the wider NightLight Service throughout shifts, ensuring that appropriate information is shared with staff following assessment and onward referral into the service. T
