The post is intended to be a concierge/ buddy service. A go-between from resident and management.

A listening ear to pass on any concerns or queries. Attending to any needs or issues that might arise on a day-to-day basis.

The Lifestyle Assistant needs to get to know each resident and their needs. To ensure residents settle into Tanglewood happily and have a positive experience and enjoyable time with us.

Moving to a care home is a big step and we want to make it as smooth and happy as possible.

Making residents feel at home and welcome, the Lifestyle Assistant plays a key role in supporting that transition.

Ensure their own personal space feels as homely as residents want it to be.

Be aware of residents’ birthdays - inform the kitchen and the entertainments team (log in diary).

Introduce yourself, find out about the resident, their hobbies, interests and personalities. Get to know them and become friends. Introduce yourself to their family members/ friends, obtain contact details so you can keep touch on behalf of the resident.

Ensure your residents are comfortable and liaise as necessary with housekeeping/ maintenance/care team leaders/ catering/ hairdressing/chiropody and activities etc.

Ensure residents are aware of the activities programme. Ensure they are able to attend any activity they might wish to attend. Make sure they get a weekly activity sheet and a monthly newsletter.

Facilitate personal shopping trips for residents - to buy clothing etc., trips to bank and post office. Offer to take residents out for coffee, walks around town whatever seems appropriate to each individual.

Get to know your residents so you are able to offer a ‘listening ear’ should you feel that necessary.

Spend one-to-one time, e.g. looking at photo albums, general chatting, reading, and talking. Use the lifestyle budget - occasionally just to brighten someone’s day.

(Small bunch of flowers if they have been down etc., a coffee or ice cream while out etc.)

Spend time getting to know residents’ families. Build up a relationship with them so they know they can talk to you in confidence or ask you to arrange any special treat.

Plan trips which might be appropriate and organise transport, venues etc.

Encourage residents to socialise together. Perhaps arrange a tea party/ coffee morning.

Identify specific personal activities; discuss with the Activities Co-Ordinator. Liaise with the activities team and if you feel the residents would like a specific activity that is not available on the programme, arrange it yourself.

Assist residents at certain activities (clothing sales etc. or fayres and help them with their personal allowance and spending, ensuring receipts are forwarded to Home Administrator.

Accompany residents into town (either by car or on foot).

Actively market Tanglewood and promote a positive personal and professional attitude within the local community, ensuring the good reputation of the home.

Adapt and create an atmosphere that suits individual residents and their needs.

Maintain a record of how you have assisted individual residents.

Attend funerals as necessary.

This list is not exhaustive and it really is one of the more rewarding roles within care. You are the centre of the resident’s world, you keep them grounded and stimulated and it can help them physically and mentally retain their independence.
