- Starting salary of £18898 per year
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Workings hours are 37.5 hours per week

**What will I be doing as an apprentice?** This is a hands-on role, where you will be responsible for supporting all the laboratory’s testing, research, and development needs. You will be part of a team who are supporting a number of different projects, and closely involved in new field-based environmentalscience initiative of the Open University.
Just know that as an apprentice you will be working as part of a close-knit team, so you won’t be alone. You will be trained in how to work safely in a quality-controlled laboratory with support from your mentor, whilst maintaining excellent housekeepingand in accordance with Health and Safety, environment, and risk management systems. You will maintain equipment and instrumentation and notify the lab manager of any defects requiring attention.
No two days are ever the same as a laboratory technician. Duties can include:
- Opportunity to meet others, aiding professional progression and skill sharing.
- Prepare different types of samples for subsequent analysis, how to obtain accurate data and how to report it.
- Installing and maintaining a range of environmental sensors
- Collecting and processing environmental samples (e.g. leaf, soil, water)
- Maintenance of stock solutions and consumables stocks.
- Ensuring equipment and chemical inventories are up to date.
- Ensuring that the laboratory is clean and safe.
During your time with us, you will be involved in some project work too. This will give you the opportunity to gain even more in-depth knowledge but at the same time, it will allow you to be creative and put forward your ideas. Involvement in a new environmentalscience project will provide a great opportunity for leadership development for the right person.
What could the future look like?
There’s no limit to what you can achieve if you work for the Open University, with potential for the successful applicant to be offered a full-time position working with the institute at the end of the apprenticeship.
The successful applicant can expect full training and support to provide competency and responsibility in carrying out testing and to help develop a career in laboratory analysis and technical support for field-based research. Not only that but the apprenticewill have the opportunity to become a registered Science technician (RSci Tech).
**Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise** Experience
Whilst previous experience is great, we at Tiro are always open to wildcards. We’re not just interested in experience and qualifications; we’re looking for someone with the right attitude and aptitude to fit right in at The Open University.
**Qualifications**:
It’s about enthusiasm, not school results. In our experience the most successful apprentices are those who are driven to find out more about the sector, can be up front about what they do and don’t already know, are considerate, self-reflective, and impatientto learn the job role
About You
Being proactive in your own development and willingness to commit to lifelong learning and development is key.
Someone who’s genuinely curious about the worlds of science and technology. You’ll give the role your all and will fundamentally be hungry to learn and most importantly willing to take the first step into a life changing career.

**So how does the apprenticeship work?** At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.
Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on 'off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spentwriting assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at The Open University who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge,skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.
Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme
