**SECTION 1 - MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**: Movement Transfer of patients either walking, in wheelchairs, on a bed/trolley or by ambulance from wards and departments within the required time. Assist with of the moving and handling of patients when requested. Moving deceased patients from wards/ departments to the mortuary in a discreet and sensitive manner, observing any religious or cultural requirements. Collection and delivery of meal trolleys from kitchens and Wards Collection and delivery of pharmacy boxes to wards and departments Collection and delivery of specimens from wards and departments to the path lab.
Collection of blood products from blood transfusion and deliver to wards and departments with appropriate documentation. Delivery and return of general stores to wards and departments on a daily basis Collection and removal of all waste throughout the hospital Movement of furniture etc. within wards and departments, to include full office moves when requested. Deliver and exchange medical gas cylinders in wards and departments.
Receive medical gas deliveries and store in accordance with manufacturers guidelines Deliver clean linen to wards and departments ensuring stocks of linen are maintained at predetermined levels. Deliver and collect mail, notes, parcels etc. from wards and department To carry out requests as instructed by the authorised Transport Administrator To maintain accurate records of all journeys including mileage, departure and arrival time for each request carried out. Ensure that whilst driving Trust vehicles, you do so safely with the welfare of staff, patients and other road users a priority.
Ensure that Trust vehicles remain clean and roadworthy, reporting any defects to the Transport Administrator. Caring for Patients Provide appropriate and necessary assistance for patients to access vehicles. This may include supporting unsteady patients or maneuvering of wheelchairs, stretchers around hazards or in constricted environments ; Ensure that patients have all relevant and necessary paperwork, medication etc. required for discharge.
Giving patients and others advice and guidance about the process of transportation, reassuring patients when they are anxious. When dropping off patients following discharge, ensure that the patient is left in a safe and secure environment; Providing Basic Life Support if necessary Driving Review planned journeys to optimise routes, maximising both fuel efficiency and loading capacity of vehicles whilst complying with any expected standards for patient care. Communication and Working Relationships The postholder is expected to liaise with other members of portering staff to enable the fulfillment of their duties. Where their duties bring them into contact with other groups e.g.
other Trust staff, patients and their visitors, a professional working manner should be adopted. When this contact includes members of the general public, common courtesy should be shown Communicate clearly with people and involve patients in their care, as individual behaviour can make a significant difference to the patient experience General Ensure that communications equipment is in good working order. To assist in the training staff and share good practice in the correct use of equipment, movements of patients, etc. and on-job training thereafter.
Safeguard patient and Trust confidentiality at all times and uphold the codes of conduct and level of professionalism and courtesy expected by Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Report any critical incidents that occur during a shift and refer to a senior manager to allow corrective action to be taken. Undertake any training and development as required by the Trust. Undertake any other duties as directed by your Manager. Treat everyone with whom you come into contact with dignity and respect.

SECTION 2 - KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Full UK driving license is desirable, but not essential Attend mandatory Training Competent in use of two-way radio system Good verbal communication skills Good written communication skills Good telephone manner Good geographical knowledge of the Tameside Hospital site Good geographical knowledge of the Greater Manchester area SECTION 3 - EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT: Maintain an accurate log of daily duties Prioritise multiple tasks Maintain a professional attitude Ensure full uniform is worn at all times Answer queries in relation to transportation requests Transport cargo both on and off site Transport patients and staff both on and off site The role entails frequent lifting, bending, twisting and stretching. Frequent requirement to walk long distances across site from base and with patients, equipment, supplies etc. Physical effort to push beds, trolleys and wheelchairs Requires a high level of concentration including responding to unpredictable work patterns, interruptions and the need to meet deadlines.
