A unique package of support is currently available to start a new career as a professional childminder in the following local authority areas:

- Argyll and Bute (specifically Rosneath & Kintyre Peninsulas, Islands of Tiree, Coll, and Bute)
- Dumfries & Galloway (all areas)
- Dundee City (all areas)
- East Renfrewshire (all areas)
- Edinburgh city (all areas)
- Glasgow (all areas)
- Highland (north and coast areas considered, particularly Sutherland and Lochinver to Kinlochverbie)
- Western Isles (Barra, South Uist and Stornoway)
- North Ayrshire (Arran and Cumbrae)

The Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) is working in collaboration with these local authorities to provide this fantastic opportunity, which includes training and a minimum £750* grant to help you establish your new business from home and is predominantly aimed at parents who’d like to get back into employment.

As the only organisation in Scotland dedicated to supporting all aspects of childminding, SCMA is there for you every step of the way; from establishing your new career to providing you with resources and support to help your new business to thrive. You’ll be self-employed, running your own business from home at hours that suit you, but you’ll also be part of a wider community of professional childminders in Scotland.

Childminders are self-employed, providing a flexible, high quality childcare service in a family setting. This means you will be responsible for tailoring unique one-to-one care for each child in your setting, playing an active role in their wellbeing and development and a central role in their young lives.
- **Why Become A Childminder?**_

More childminders are urgently required and there is growing demand from families for this form of childcare all over Scotland, but particularly in specific urban and rural communities within these local authority areas. Childminders provide extremely high-quality childcare for 0-12 years (or 16 years in the case of children who may have additional support needs).
- **Qualifications**:_
- You must have a passion for working with children and families
- The process of becoming a childminder can typically take approximately 6 months, this is to enable you to become registered as a childminder with the Care Inspectorate
- You don’t need to have previous childcare experience or qualifications, however, improving practice and seeking to achieve the best possible outcomes for children is what makes childminding such a high-quality service. As such, childminders are required to complete 12 hours of Continuous Professional Learning per year.
