Although a driving post you will join an excellent team and have many interactions with staff across the Trust and other venues.

Applicants are invited for the post of Blood Courier to work within the Transport Services Team, Estates & Facilities Department. Applicants are required to have a clean driving license, be able to communicate effectively both written and verbal and have very good interpersonal skills.

Experience working in the NHS would be an advantage.

The post involves daily interaction with staff at all levels across the Trust and other NHS providers across Merseyside. Accurate record keeping is a key task within this role. The post holder will be expected to use their own initiative to plan routine and ad hoc requests for the service.

The post holder will work a shift pattern including nights and weekends.

Responding immediately to requests for emergency blood samples to be taken to the Liverpool NHS Foundation Trust or Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and collect blood, blood products and samples as required.
Recording accurately all requests in relation to the transportation of blood, blood products and samples.
Assisting the on-call haematologist if a Level 1 has been called. Transport the haematologist from the Royal Hospital to Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust if requested.
Liaising with departments whilst supporting an emergency situation to prioritise work.
Collecting and tracking blood and blood products.
Ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
Assess, prioritise and organise own workload to ensure that specimens are collected and transported in a timely manner whilst working within the community setting. Proactively respond to requests from both trained and untrained staff in relation to ad hoc requests.
Able to demonstrate tact, diplomacy, empathy, calm and professional at all times to patients, visitors and colleagues.
Deliver and receive comprehensive handover with blood courier colleagues at shift changes.
Ensure that infection control and health and safety measures are adhered to in relation to transportation of blood, blood products and samples.
Reporting any issues with the transport vehicle promptly and following guidance in the event of a mechanical failure.
To drive safely adhering to the Highway Code at all times.
Escalate promptly to the Hospital Transport Manager any issues or concerns.
Provide support, from time to time, to other Trust transport services to cover absences to ensure all services are effectively maintained.
