Accrington, United Kingdom Rethink Mental Illness Full time

The Community Mental Health Framework (CMHF) is part of the NHS England Long Term Plan for Mental Health. As part of the CMHF, NHS England invited bids from Integrated Care Systems to receive funding for a programme of radical redesign of community mental health services. Somerset was an early implementer of this radical redesign, and prompted the formation of the Open Mental Health VCSE Alliance in 2019. We are an alliance of Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations working together, along with Experts by Experience, across Somerset to support individuals with a range of mental health needs.

Rethink Mental Illness is the Lead Accountable Body for the VCSE Alliance. Building on learning from the alliance and other early implementers over the last two years, Rethink Mental Illness have published the **Communities That Care report **the **Thinking Differently STP Guides **and **Local Authority Guidance **as blueprints for redesigning the CMHF model to support people severely affected by mental illness. It is our view that this radical redesign is not a task for the NHS alone, but for communities and those working in them to come together and collaborate far more closely.

**About the role**

We have recently brought on board a freelance Independent Chair to support the work of the Somerset Open Mental Health VCSE Alliance. We are now looking for an Expert by Experience Vice Chair, to work closely alongside the Independent Chair. You will be based in Somerset and able to commit approximately 3 days/month of your time to this role.

Open Mental Health (OMH) is the partnership between our VCSE alliance, the NHS, Somerset County Council, and individuals with lived experience of mental illness. We are working together to improve the way people in Somerset receive support with their mental health by providing access to a number of specialist and holistic services and by changing the way that support is offered and provided. We are working to change the culture and language associated with traditional mental health provision and believe that by working collaboratively in new and innovative ways we can support people together to achieve a better quality of life.

Our alliance and our work has grown rapidly over the past three years. The alliance is now undertaking delivery to the value of approx. £5m/yr.

**Objectives of the role**
- Ensure that the work of the Partnership Board is informed by, and remains focused on, the voice of
- lived experience
- Work with the Independent Chair to provide leadership to the OMH VCSE Alliance Board
- Hold the board and Lead Accountable Body (LAB) to account for the alliance vision, mission and values
- Be a critical friend to the Independent Chair and to the Partnership Board, at all times championing the voice of lived experience
- Along with the Independent Chair, the LAB and other board members, act as an ambassador for the
- Somerset OMH VCSE alliance
- Be involved in public speaking, working with internal and external senior stakeholders, and other public engagements.
- Have active and regular communication with board members

**Requirements of the post holder**

**Essential**:

- Lived experience of mental illness
- Experience of attending and contributing to meetings
- Experience of reporting back to others following attendance at meetings
- A passion for enabling change for people severely affected by mental illness
- A clear commitment to your own learning and continuous improvement
- An ability to describe the blocks and barriers facing people affected by mental illness
- An ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of people

**Desirable**:

- Knowledge of Somerset voluntary sector
- Knowledge of commissioner’s and stakeholder’s interests
