The responsibilities for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for 2023 are as follows:

- Delivering talent programmes, physical and digital infrastructure and regulation to support our economy, security and public services
- R&D funding
For 2023, our priorities are:
- Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.
- Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs - including by delivering world-class physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.
- Put our public services - including the NHS and schools - at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of in-house STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.
- Strengthen international collaboration on science and technology in line with the Integrated Review, and ensure our researchers are able to continue to work with leading scientists in Europe and around the world.
- Deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms to drive competition and promote innovation, including the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill and our pro-innovation approach to regulating AI.
- Pass the remaining stages of the reformed Online Safety Bill to keep British people, especially children, safe online.

**Job description**:
**The role and our team**
As a brand new department, the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) will be responsible for finding answers to many of the most pressing challenges we face, both today and in the future. From cutting NHS waiting lists, to lowering the costs of everyday goods and services, innovation will be at the heart of the government’s response and as such has been given a seat at the Cabinet table.
This is an exciting opportunity for a communications or public affairs professional to join the External Affairs team at DSIT as a Senior External Affairs Officer.
Our work in External Affairs is fast paced and varied, requiring close working with Ministers, senior external stakeholders, policy officials, and communications colleagues to identify and shape engagement opportunities that build advocacy and promote the department's priorities.
This could include pre-briefing external stakeholders ahead of an important announcement, developing a speech opportunity for a Minister to set out their vision, or organising a stakeholder reception to build relationships with key individuals and organisations.
The ability to build trusted relationships, collaborate effectively with senior stakeholders, and identify opportunities for partnership activity is at the heart of this role.
The role would suit a confident individual with experience of working on high-profile issues within a complex stakeholder landscape, managing events and thriving under pressure while maintaining sound political judgement.
