The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) works as part of the ward/department team under the supervision of registered nurses and midwives and participates in the delivery of patient care

contributing towards ward/department organisation, supporting registered nurses in the provision of a safe and caring environment and assisting with the induction, supervision and training of Band 2 and Band 3 healthcare assistants.

The Band 3 healthcare assistant will demonstrate a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific tasks delegated by the nurse in charge and in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies, including infection prevention and control measures such as cleaning the equipment before and after use, wearing appropriate PPE and performing hight standard hand washing as per policy and procedures. S/he will undertake both routine and specially identified tasks for which they have been trained and assessed as competent. The healthcare assistant will be responsible to provide personal care, assisting patients when mobilising when required, performing vital signs and capillary blood glucose measurements on a regular and as required basis, assisting patients with nutrition and hydration when required, and supporting the nursing team to achieve all their care goals.

The Band 3 NA will adhere to Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England (2013), and Compassion in Practice
