**Job summary**:
Building a strong Commercial Function in Government, and with it the right commercial capability, is at the heart of a far-reaching programme of Civil Service reform.

We have already made significant progress through the establishment of the Government Commercial Organisation (GCO), our single employer of senior commercial talent across government. This role will sit within the GCO, but based in our Department for Business and Trade commercial team delivering departmental objectives.

**Job description**:
The Head of Category - Marketing, Events and Corporate Services role will head a strong commercial team of 9 FTEs working with stakeholders from across DBT, leading on:

- a significant portfolio of commercial spend,
- business and category strategies, and
- delivering excellent commercial outcomes for DBT’s key priorities.

As Head of Category, you will play a leading role in providing a central service for critical business areas, supporting colleagues across DBT and HMG with procurement and contracting best practice and advice to deliver against team, departmental and cross government objectives.

This role requires an experienced procurement and contracts management professional with in-depth understanding of public procurement regulations and up to date knowledge of the events, marketing and/or corporate services sectors. The post holder will require experience of delivering commercial outcomes, maintaining high customer satisfaction, leading teams and managing in a fast pace and ambiguous environment.

Leveraging their procurement and contract management expertise the post holder will be expected to develop an understanding of, and provide leadership across, the following categories of spend:

- Marketing
- Events
- Corporate Services

The post holder will be responsible for setting category strategies and leading on all aspects of high value (>£500k) category commercial activity. The post holder will also be directly responsible for contract management of high profile and strategically important contracts on behalf of the department including ensuring robust supplier management, standards setting, payments management, negotiation and issue management and for supporting professional contract management across the wider Department.

And, as a member of the Government Commercial Function and as part of the DIT Commercial Senior Leadership Team, you will play a leading role in the team, actively supporting colleagues to deliver against team objectives, representing the team at a senior level within DIT and to wider government and industry.

**Person specification**:
The main responsibilities are likely to include:

- Building and managing key relationships with the client teams across DBT, external stakeholders, suppliers and other corporate functions including Change, Portfolio, Finance and HR teams and championing coordinated delivery.
- Leading and supporting your team in providing effective business partnering and commercial delivery across a range of categories, managing all programme, procurement, and contract management activity.
- Leading and supporting your team in ensuring that commercial risk is understood and managed. This is achieved through supporting business planning, maintaining a pipeline of activity, providing on-the-shoulder commercial advisory as well as project and commercial management for major programmes.
- Leading and supporting your team in identifying and managing high priority, high risk, high value Contracts and Supplier Relationships. Including ensuring robust Contract Management, aligned to the Government Commercial Organisation (GCO) “Contract Management Guide”, is embedded and our contracts are delivering Value for Money.
- Ensuring that your team adhere to functional, departmental and team policies and ensuring that your team data and records are complete.
