We are looking for a Band 3 Occupational Therapy Assistant to work in our Neurology Team.

To assist the Occupational Therapist with the treatment of neurology patients and to carry out delegated assessments, eg. personal care practices with specified patients, transfer practices and adaptation if needed, obtaining information from patients about their personal skills and home situation.

This will also involve liaising with relatives and multi-disciplinary team members and progressing the patient for discharge including updating treatment plans and patient’s goals in discussion with the Occupational Therapist.

The Acute Occupational Therapy service are a supportive and welcoming team covering the speciality areas (Acute Frailty, Neurology, Surgery,
Orthopaedics, Medicine and Emergency Department) in Musgrove Park Hospital and the Somerset Neurological Rehabilitation Centre which are
both situated in Taunton.

We have a mix of individuals in static and rotational roles but have an ethic of both continuous improvement and development as part of this. We
are working to raise the profile and identity of the profession in this setting and across the organisation.

The acute team is part of the wider Occupational Therapy service and we are keen to establish communities of practice across organisational
boundaries to improve the cohesion and integration of the services we offer in Somerset.

Having a shared OT strategy across Somerset allow us to build on a firm foundation of a shared vision for how OT is delivered in Somerset. This
allows us to offer really exciting and progressive opportunities and services to our Occupational Therapists and our communities.

To observe patients behaviour, ability and responses during Occupational Therapy intervention, eg. during kitchen and personal care practise.

The post holder will also identify the requirements for the provision of adaptive equipment and/or techniques during the kitchen/personal care practise. These observations and recommendations will be communicated verbally to the Occupational Therapist and details recorded in the patient’s ward notes.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant will be responsible for following through recommendations with patients allocated to them, under the overall supervision of the Occupational Therapist.

The post holder will be expected to provide treatment sessions advised by the Occupational Therapist to work on specific areas of deficit, for example upper limb mobilisation or activities to address visual field deficit.

Under supervision of the Occupational Therapist, the post holder will need to plan appropriate intervention with patient participation in the goal planning process and ensure these goals are documented.

To obtain appropriate information from medical and care plan notes and through verbal information from patients regarding their personal, domestic, social and medical situation and communicate this verbally to the Occupational Therapist and to record the details in the patient’s occupational therapy records and medical notes as appropriate.

To participate in handovers to receive relevant screening information and be able to prioritise designated caseload with the guidance of the Occupational Therapist.

To be responsive to the needs of the department’s priorities and demonstrate flexible working to prioritise own designated caseload along side the demands of other therapists within the team/department.

To review and reflect on own practice and performance and identify and participate in training activities to meet the developmental needs and skills required for this position.

The post holder will be expected to use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools e.g. explanation, negotiation, persuasion, motivation and empathy, to communicate effectively with patients in order to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating e.g. patients may be dysphasic, depressed, and sensory impaired or who may be unable to accept diagnosis.

To be aware of and appropriately manage sensitive and/or complicated information related to the patient’s diagnosis or social situation. To deal sensitively with patients who have high levels of anxiety and aggression caused by pain, dementia and limited mobility. This will include patients with challenging behaviour, terminal illness and degenerative disease.

To report on a daily basis, both written and verbally, to the supervising Occupational Therapist on the caseload of designated patients and plans for ongoing occupational therapy intervention and discharge planning.

To develop a close professional working relationship with Occupational Therapists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team, through a respect for, and understanding of their different roles and training.
