It is an academy converter linked to a multi-academy trust called the St John Bosco Catholic Academy, which is associated with three Dudley-based Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

A smaller than average secondary school, Bishop Milner provides 800 places for students between the ages of 11 and 18 when fully subscribed.

Bishop Milner opened in September 1960 as the only Catholic secondary school in the Dudley area. It changed its name from Catholic School to Catholic College to reflect its openness to students up to the age of 18.
