JOB PURPOSE The jobholder will have overall responsibility for the management of nursing/associated staff and the management of nursing resources/budgets with the Clinical Service Unit or a part of it. The jobholder will be accountable for ensuring the highest standard of clinical care is provided within the wards and departments for which they are responsible and ensure the principles of clinical governance are implemented at a local level. The jobholder will work in partnership with the facilities department in ensuring high standards of hospital cleanliness is maintained, embracing the principles outlined in the Matrons charter. The jobholder will be easily identifiable to patients, provide strong leadership through a visible presence and provide support, advice and assistance required by patients, their families and carers.

The jobholder will also support the implementation of a Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), being a focal point for advice to patients and carers and local resolution of complaints. In additional to site specific patches, Matron post may also have specific Trustwide elements (e.g. Lead Cancer Nurse). Within locality hospitals the role will also incorporate Hospital Site Management responsibility (e.g.

hospital wide communication & Health & Safety). JOB DIMENSIONS The jobholder has, through Senior Sisters/ Charge Nurses, direct management of the nursing/midwifery and support staff within the service. Within certain CSUs this will also include direct line management of the specialist nurses; the exact number of staff for whom the person has accountability will be clearly detailed within each role. The jobholder is responsible for the management of nursing resources and ward and department budgets.
