We have an exciting opportunity for a trainee livestock buyer to join our livestock team. We are seeking an enthusiastic and process driven individual who has a real interest in the meat industry and livestock as part of the food chain. This is a demanding, supplier facing role which requires a high level of attention to detail, excellent communication skills and computer literacy, as you will be liaising with farmers, vets, livestock and abattoir teams to ensure animal welfare is maintained and cattle are processed in line with legislative requirements.
- Ensure livestock purchased meets production requirements and are in line with production plans to meet the needs of the customer
- Co-ordinate with livestock agents, farmers and other livestock suppliers for the supply of cattle.
- Learn and maintain knowledge of lairage and abattoir operations
- Carry out farm visits for cattle selection, maintain relationships with farmers, including producer group meetings.
- Ensure livestock deliveries are to schedule.
- Actively negotiate prices and develop partnerships with key stakeholders and suppliers.
- Contribute to the recording and maintenance of slaughter information and data.
- Ensure the team adheres to the current animal welfare legislation and company operating procedures at all times with regard to safe movements, handling and production.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills
- Able to maintain a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
- Great interpersonal skills and an approachable attitude
- Self-motivated, methodical, well organised with exceptional interpersonal communication skills and ability to communicate across all levels.
- Good working knowledge of Animal Welfare Legislation
- Full UK Driving License

This role is based at Burradon, Newcastle Upon-Tyne.
